A $325,000 profit. Not bad.

Could they (Greg Merillat's 4-K's LLP) be selling KDCO 1550 AM and it's FM translator at 94.1 FM because they (Mile High Sports) are in the running to buy KKFN 104.3 FM?
If not, will the new owner keep the existing sports format?
Or will it change to something totally different?

This will be Marc Paskin's only radio property so far.

KDCO has applied with the FCC to go from 990 watts to 5,000 watts.

KDCO AM is now playing music. I can't pickup 94.1 FM here to see if it is playing the same feed.
It's a mix of Adult Alternative and Classic Rock. The songs have gaps of silence between them and there's no jocks.

Mile High Sports' web site posted today:

"Mile High Sports Radio is making changes! In the coming days, we will be announcing where you’ll be able to find all of your favorite shows. The new version of MHSR will be bigger and better than ever!
We appreciate the support of our loyal listeners and sponsors, and look forward to continuing to provide Colorado sports fans with the best live and local sports talk in Denver."

Host Gil Whiteley posted on his twitter today:

"Mile High Sports Radio grows again. . . We are moving to a new and stronger signal next week on June 1st. I'll keep you posted."
"I'll let you know when I can give you our new numbers. . . Looking forward to reaching out to more of the Colorado's front range."

Then why would they apply to the FCC for higher power output than? That doesn't make any sense on why they would do that and than turn around and take over 104.3? Besides the sale of Lincoln hasn't completed yet. They still own that station, among the rest.

You're right the sale of Lincoln has not been completed yet but the sale of 1550 KDCO and the 94.1 Translator has closed according to RadioInsight. As a result Mile High Sports Radio is moving from that signal to an stronger one in Denver.

With Marc Paskin’s Marco Broadcasting closing on its $875,000 acquisition of 1550 KDCO/94.1 K231BQ Golden, CO/Denver from 4-K’s LLLP, “Mile High Sports Radio” has lost its on-air home.

A message on the station’s website states: Mile High Sports Radio is making changes! In the coming days, we will be announcing where you’ll be able to find all of your favorite shows. The new version of MHSR will be bigger and better than ever! We appreciate the support of our loyal listeners and sponsors, and look forward to continuing to provide Colorado sports fans with the best live and local sports talk in Denver. Stay tuned!

One of the station’s hosts, Gil Whiteley tweeted that the programming will return on a “new and stronger signal” on Monday, June 1.

No word yet where its new home will be. Mile High Sports Radio grows again... We are moving to a new and stronger signal next week on June 1st. I'll keep you posted. — Gil Whiteley

This is the second time the Mile High Sports Radio programming was displaced by a sale. In March 2014, the station relocated from 1510 KCKK Littleton/93.7 K229BS Loveland after its owners sold the signals to Hunt Broadcasting for $1.6 million. 4-K’s then purchased 1550/94.1 from Advanced Modulation Broadcasting in November for $550,000 before turning around in February to sell them for $875,000. No word yet on what is currently airing on 1550 KDCO/94.1 K231BQ.

I haven't heard any solid word about Mile High Sports buying KKFN, but it is a great possibility if they have the credit/cash to do it. We will find out for sure a week from Monday (or before).

BUT, I assume KKFN will sell for up to 5-10 times what Mile High just sold KDCO/94.1 for.
AND, as far as I know, the divestiture of KKFN has been held up for some legal reasons.

The power upgrades of KDCO and 94.1 was probably a part of the deal for the new buyer, Marc Paskin. It does make the station worth more.

It will be interesting to see what Paskin will do with KDCO/94.1.
As I've said over the past few years, an Classic Alternative/Retro 80s/90s format could do well here. Someone could get some listeners away from KTCL and KBCO.

Radio report: Mile High Sports Radio have been silenced for now

Mile High Sports radio (94.1 FM, 1550 AM) has been off the air since Thursday.

As part of a complicated broadcasting ownership deal, the two frequencies are now the properties of Marco Broadcasting. Marco has switched both stations to "oldies" music formats.

Mile High Sports president James Merilatt says his company's sports format will return to new dial slots "in the near future."

Irv Brown and Joe Williams, longtime talk show hosts who had been doing the 1-2 p.m. weekday show, were called Thursday morning and told not to come in.

Mile High operates differently from most sports radio outlets. Talk show hosts buy air time from Mile High and sell advertising spots to sponsors.

Oldies huh? I wish someone would tell the people over at radio-locator.com, since they have it as a Classic Rock station.
It makes me wonder if they are either talking about KJAC or KKFN? There isn't any other Strong frequencies left in Denver that is up for sale?

The Denver Post/Dusty Saunders has it wrong. KDCO has been playing a mix of Adult Alternative and Classic Rock.

Any station is up for sale, if you have enough money. So Mile High Sport's new station could be almost any of them...

There are just so many possibilities...

It could be that Mile High Sports enters into a lease agreement for KKFN. Or is able to buy it. But I really think the price would be too high for them.

Or Mile High Sports shows up on another station either through a lease agreement or a purchase...

One possibility that keeps entering my head is that they could show up on a station like KKZN 760 AM. KKZN's signal covers the front range and their ratings haven't been good so the format change could be a win-win for iHeart and Mile High Sports.

So, will we see a "Bud 94-1" branding soon? Most likely a reference to the legal pot here... :D

MARCO BROADCASTING CORP. is debuting Rock KBUD-A-K231BQ (SMOKIN 94.1)/DENVER as what it calls the "first music station to specifically target people who smoke pot, which is legal in COLORADO."
The station has added the syndicated BUBBA THE LOVE SPONGE show for mornings. MARCO bought the station, the former Sports KDCO, in MARCH from 4K'S LLLP, which bought the station from VIC MICHAEL's ADVANCED MODULATION BROADCASTING, LLC and CEDAR COVE BROADCASTING, INC. just before that.
KBUD owner MARC PASKIN said, "I have created a unique radio format, there is no radio station anywhere in the country like SMOKIN 94.1. There is not a better fit for our mornings than BUBBA THE LOVE SPONGE. He loves weed, fast cars, hot girls, and rock music. I think BUBBA will take DENVER by storm!"
BUBBA added, “Rock music and smoking pot have historically gone together like peanut butter and jelly. The BUBBA THE LOVE SPONGE Show has been an advocate for the legalization of marijuana long before it was the cool thing to do. Our listeners understand these facts, which is why many loyal BUBBA ARMY members from my national audience have moved to COLORADO since they legalized weed, so it will be like hooking up with old friends. I can’t wait to fire it up in DENVER.”

With the exit of “Mile High Sports Radio“, Marco Broadcasting has relaunched 1550 KDCO/94.1 K231BQ Golden/Denver, CO as “Smokin 94.1” KBUD. Featuring a mix of Rock hits and marijuana themed programming, KBUD will also air the syndicated Bubba The Love Sponge in mornings. The station is focusing on the niche of weed smokers in the first state to legalize marijuana, just like the short-lived on-air version of “K-High” in Colorado Springs.

Denver has a new morning show on a brand new radio station. The Bubba the Love Sponge Show ® will lead off when Smokin 94.1 debuts early Monday. The four-hour show featuring Bubba, Ned, Manson and 25 Cent, will air Monday through Friday from 6-10 am on the first station in the United States to specifically target people who smoke pot – which is legal in Colorado. “I have created a unique radio format, there is no radio station anywhere in the country like Smokin 94.1,” claims owner Marc Paskin. “There is not a better fit for our morning show than Bubba the Love Sponge ®. I think Bubba will take Denver by storm!” Bubba is equally excited about his ‘Rocky Mountain High’ debut. “Rock music and smoking pot have historically gone together like peanut butter and jelly,” he says. “The Bubba the Love Sponge Show® has been an advocate for the legalization of marijuana long before it was the cool thing to do. Our listeners understand these facts, which is why many loyal Bubba Army® members from my national audience have moved to Colorado since they legalized weed, so it will be like hooking up with old friends. I can’t wait to fire it up in Denver.” The rest of Smokin 94.1?s day will feature a rock music format. Ed Blaze will man the controls from 10 am to 3 pm. Gary Ganja will handle the drive home from 3-7 pm and Stoney Reynolds will handle the 7pm-midnight shift. Billy Blunt is a weekend jock at the station.

From The Denver Post:

A radio format geared to pot enthusiasts bowed Monday in Denver as Smokin 94.1 FM. Picking up the format from Bubba the Love Sponge (http://www.btls.com/) out of Tampa, FL, the station is also on 1550 AM. The details:

Bubba the Love Sponge “loves weed, fast cars, hot girls and rock music” – and that’s why Colorado station owner Mark Paskin of Marco Broadcasting adds Tampa-based Bubba for mornings, starting today. Bubba is equally enthusiastic (and quotable) – “Rock music and smoking pot [as you can do legally in Colorado] have historically gone together like peanut butter and jelly.”

He adds that from a policy standpoint, his show “has been an advocate for legalization long before it was the cool thing to do.” He says “I wait to fire it up in Denver” – though some Denverites won’t be able to catch his new signal. It’s on Marco’s KBUD at 1550 AM, licensed to west-of-Denver Golden, Colorado, and rebroadcast on a translator at 94.1. The AM has a construction permit to raise daytime power from 990 watts to 5,000, and the translator over-achieves. It’s 250 watts sitting high in the Rockies, more than 2,000 feet above Denver. For those able to get a contact high from one of the two signals, “Smokin’ 94.1” is the new home of Bubba the Love Sponge.

Chuck Lontine, a longtime Colorado radio operator and broker, said, “I’ve been involved in countless discussions with radio owners and investment bankers all over our state [and in Washington] who have attempted to blend this industry into a radio revenue model. It’s quite the Gordian knot. At the end of the day, dispensaries are pretty much becoming as common as a Starbucks. Only with armed guards.
“Only time will tell how this bold move will translate into a successful revenue plus listener model.”

INTRODUCING SMOKIN 94.1, DENVER'S NEW MARIJUANA RADIO STATION

678

In mid-April, a former Colorado Springs-area Fox Sports radio outlet switched its format to K-HIGH, a marijuana-talk station.

Now, a Denver station has followed suit.

What had been KDCO-FM/Mile High Sports Radio is now KBUD-FM, also known as Smokin 94.1.

In March, the station and its sister signal at 1550 AM were reportedly sold to Marc Paskins's Marco Broadcasting for $875,000. And this morning, Smokin FM launched with syndicated host Bubba the Love Sponge.

679

Bubba, who's made headlines for shenanigans aplenty over the years (click to read about his claimed Hulk Hogan sex tape), is based in Florida, and his show isn't exclusively about pot. This morning, however, he kindly did an extended segment about THC lube.

Starting at 10 a.m., the man behind the microphone will be Ed Blaze....

680

...followed by Gary Ganja and Stoney Reynolds. And on weekends, the man in charge is Billy Blunt:

681

What to expect? A blend of pot talk and rock music that's considered to be smokin'. Like, for instance, Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," which I caught this afternoon.

"I have created a unique radio format, there is no radio station anywhere in the country like Smokin 94.1," Paskin told AllAccess.com, adding, "There is not a better fit for our mornings than Bubba the Love Sponge. He loves weed, fast cars, hot girls and rock music. I think Bubba will take Denver by storm!"

In his own statement, Bubba added: “Rock music and smoking pot have historically gone together like peanut butter and jelly.

Given the challenges facing terrestrial radio these days, the folks behind Smokin 94.1 are hardly guaranteed success. But give them credit for trying something new (or at least pretty new), rather than cycling through the usual formats.

There's ads all of the time for them on radio and tv.

The whole pot thing is a great gimmick to get their new format a bunch of media coverage.

This isn't about any pending FCC approval. I'm not sure whether Gil is dumb enough to actually believe that or whether he thinks his former listeners/clients are fools. Stations change formats and management all the time while official approval is pending. The Mile High Sports group are cash poor and are in a mad scramble to figure SOMETHING out. They're not "growing," they're dying. They had virtually no listeners before. They'll have even fewer listeners when they get back, IF they get back. Who in his/her right mind would spend hard-earned money to advertise with these people ever again? They just stop broadcasting one day; they lie about when they'll return; they lie about why their return has been delayed (that evil F.C.C. is to blame). I wouldn't trust these guys with my kid's lunch money.

Ok, and what position on the FM dial is he thinking of putting it on? The only two power houses that have a strong signal is 104.3 and 105.5. Now we all know that soon Lincoln well be a thing of the past and 104.3 well be available for purchase. I also remember hearing something about 105.5? This station (and I could hear in Westminster on 94.1) is quite interesting to listen to. Most of the music is geared towards pot, and It makes me wonder.. Who is going to want to do business with this station with this format? Without advertisement of some sorts, there is no way in the WORLD this station can last.

I agree that the pot centered format won't last. It's probably a stunt. If not, it's a fad which won't catch on.

I also find it amazing that the feds will allow illegal businesses (by federal standards) to advertise under a federally issued commercial broadcast license. If this all goes on for long enough it's bound to get messy.

Interesting, Chase. I missed THAT. I find it amazing that they're leaking the info on some blog and not on their own website. It leads me to wonder how accurate it actually is. If the info there is correct, I suppose they may actually be waiting on FCC approval, as 1340 is currently licensed as a noncommercial educational station.

Wow, if this is all true, 8 or 10 people are going to have to get used to NOT listing to Mile High Sports Radio on a completely different frequency.

I don't believe that CPR would sell off their AM station at all! In fact the last time i asked them, they said they are keeping 1340 AM. There is no reason for them to sell it off just becasue they are now on FM?
If the owner is dumb enough to decrease the signal to 94.1 then he is not to bright of a business person, regardless that he says that he is rich.
Why wouldn't it catch on? It is different yes, but what is wrong about being different? If he was smart, he would go HD and put Mile High on 94.1 FM - 2. I know it is a repeater of the AM side.
Or he could just have it online only? That is how alot of radio stations are going now these days is just on line.

Rob

The paperwork was filed in May with the FCC by CPR to sell 1340 AM. So I'm not sure why you wouldn't believe it, Radiodude.

Also, FM translators cannot broadcast in HD due to FCC rules. Plus, the ibiquity HD technology wouldn't work with just a 250 watt signal.

The antenna change for 94.1 FM might be a case where they have to move due to other business reasons we aren't aware about...

KCNC Channel 4 did a segment tonight during their news on 94.1.

The video is here:
http://denver.cbslocal.com/2015/06/25/dj-gary-ganja-hopes-to-hit-new-high-with-music-for-stoners/

DJ Gary Ganja Hopes To Hit New High With ‘Music For Stoners’

It claims to be the first radio station of its kind in the United States and its getting a lot of different listeners.

“We’re like 420 friendly, we play music for stoners, we have marijuana comedy, this summer we’re giving away trips to Amsterdam and Jamaica,” Gary Ganja said as he started a show in mid-June.

The radio station at Smokin’ 94.1, which includes DJ’s named Mary Jane, Ed Blaze, Stoney Reynolds and the owner Gary Ganja, started on June first. Its marijuana themed from what goes out over-the-air down to the décor inside the office space and, for now, it’s still commercial free.

694

“I had a lady call me the other day from Philadelphia, and somebody else called from LA, and they listen to the radio station from work. I said why do you listen to us and they said our radio stations are boring it seems like you guys are having a good time,” Gary says.

He says he spent nearly a million dollars to buy an old sports-talk station, about $100,000 on new equipment and started playing classic rock, reggae and comedy acts. The station has seven employees with hopes to expand up to about a dozen. Smoking isn’t allowed while DJs are on-air.

“We bought the station to put the fun back in radio which is what we’re doing,” Gary says. “The individual, the mom and pop radio station doesn’t exist.

695

“I didn’t buy the station to make a lot of money, if it makes a lot of money great but that’s not the goal.”

Gary Ganja’s real name is Marc Paskin, a multi-millionaire who made his fortune in real estate and has spent the past few years giving away most of his money through philanthropic efforts in California and Hawaii. It’s been a wide ranging effort from paying a full-year’s rent for a crime victim, to making a TV show in Hawaii helping the less fortunate, naming himself “Uncle Kokua.”

“The number one thing on my bucket list was to buy an FM radio station and do something fun and unique,” Gary says. “This is my million dollar toy. It’s a toy. Some people who are successful if they make a ton of money, some people buy an airplane, some buy a yacht, I bought a radio station.”

So he’s given up retirement and is working five days a week hosting his afternoon drive time show. He was a DJ as a young adult and wanted to relive the experience, while emphasizing fun, and crazy antics that aren’t allowed at corporate stations.

“All of our listeners are not potheads we get phone calls every day who say I don’t smoke marijuana but you guys are funny,” Gary says.

Gary says he’s budgeted to go commercial-free for a few months, but the popularity is already driving the station toward the murky area where the marijuana industry and advertising collide, something not fully favored by the federal government and the Federal Communication Commission which oversees Radio licenses.

“Right now we’re not taking any advertising. We have people calling us every day, marijuana stores and other advertisers,” Gary says. “The first couple months all we want to do is play music. We’re the only radio station that plays 420 hits in a row with no commercials. It’s building up an audience for us.”

Direct from CPR, since i asked this question and here is the response i got just now:

Thanks for your phone call earlier. The press release here indicates that CPR is not selling 1340 AM, but rather exchanging it for 88.3 FM in Fort Collins. The exchange should be approved by the FCC sometime later this summer. Colorado Public Radio purchased 102.3 FM in Denver from Front Range Sports Network back in January.

So that is the offical word..1340 is being exchanged for 88.3 up here *KRKY* and i believe you posted a news article about this anyways.

Really? Mom and Pop stations don't exist? What is 93.7 the rock? His station isn't the only locally owned station, I guess he forgot about that? And as we all know (and I guess he doesn't know this) but 93.7 The ROCK has put "FUN" back in radio way before he started this station.
If he is going to decrease his power outage then he well loose listeners, besides those that found it online though.

So here is the OFFICAL Press Release of the Sale of 1340 AM for 88.3:

CENTENNIAL, Colo. May 28, 2015 – Colorado Public Radio (CPR) announced that OpenAir will start broadcasting on 88.3 FM in Fort Collins starting later this summer, meeting an expressed listener need to improve the quality and accessibility of CPR’s new music service. The new frequency builds on OpenAir’s recent move to FM on 102.3 in Denver/Boulder earlier this year.

“As Colorado’s destination for new music discovery, OpenAir needs to reflect what’s happening not just in the Denver metro area, but in key areas across the state,” said Senior Vice President of Programming Sean Nethery. “Since launching in 2011, we’ve featured a number of Fort Collins bands and artists on the air and in the CPR Performance Studio. Bringing OpenAir to Fort Collins will give listeners more access to these and the many terrific local musicians that are putting Colorado on the map as a major music destination.”

Since its inception, OpenAir has highlighted Colorado’s music community and provided listeners with insight and commentary about local musicians, new albums and upcoming events. More than 300 local, national and international bands have recorded performances and interviews in the CPR Performance Studio.

The addition of 88.3 FM was made possible through a trade purchase agreement with Cedar Cove Broadcasting, exchanging CPR’s 1340 AM in Denver for the Fort Collins frequency. CPR will continue to own the 1340 AM tower and the surrounding 10 acres at Ruby Hill.

That info was already posted in the thread about the swap: http://www.coloradomedia.net/forums/showthread.php?61211-Open-Air-KVOQ-1340-AM-gets-swapped-for-KRKY-88-3-FM-Fort-Collins-Open-Air-will-debut-on-KRKY-88-3-FM-later-this-summer

I'm thinking we may need to split the posts about the CPR swap, Mile High Sports Rumors and Smokin' 94.1 into separate threads...

Remember what I shared Rob about CPR? The only swap going on with them is the 1340 AM for 88.3 FM up here in Fort collins, and I doubt it if the ower of KBUD is keeping Mile High Sports alive. (Did you even read that news article at all that I shared on here?). I think Mile High Sports is Dead and should be left that way.

According to Mile High Sports, they will be on 1340 AM once the sale of KVOQ AM is approved by the FCC between CPR and Cedar Cove. I never said Mile High Sports was staying on 1550 AM/94.1 FM, so I'm really not sure what you are arguing here...

The FCC has approved the sale of KVOQ AM to Cedar Cove as of July 14th.
I'm being told that Mile High Sports will return to the airwaves on 1340 AM starting Monday, July 27th.

Oh goo-die! Now lets see how long they can last? Since no one knows about this at all! I figured it out.. CPR sold the license right to Ceder Cove, in return they then sold it Mile High Sports..
Now why would anyone listen or care that they are back on the air? I mean we still got 104.3 The Fan, and ESPN Radio at 105.5? They are going to really have a hard time on getting listeners, considering
all the frequency shuffles they have done.

I don't think that Cedar Cove has sold the station to Mile High Sports. It is probably a lease agreement.

The transmitter equipment was also included in the sale from CPR as the 1340 AM signal is still using the same HD Radio encoder and the RDS was still displaying "Open Air" as of yesterday when I checked.
