KUSA will add a digital subchannel 9.3, Justice Network, devoted to crime entertainment, hosted by John Walsh and including public service announcements.

The crime/mystery shows — including “Locked Up Abroad,” “LA Forensics” and “Psychic Detective” — will bracket 30- and 90-second messages devoted to catching fugitives and finding missing children. Some will be devoted to the “Bad Person of the Week,” others to safety tips.

Justic Network, distributed by Gannett and available in about a third of U.S. homes, will operate in conjunction with Crime Stoppers USA and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Due to launch this month, the network will begin with 400 hours of Turner Broadcasting library programming, including former CourtTV and TruTV shows “Body of Evidence,” “Masterminds,” “Psychic Detectives” and “The Investigators.”

This is the latest subchannel to launch locally. Because broadcasters can squeeze more data into their channel space thanks to digital compression, there’s room for multiple offshoot channels. Broadcasters are under no obligation to use this extra channel space, but they’re finding interesting and varied uses for it. (See the CBS-distributed retro-TV subchannel Decades on CBS4.)
