Denver’s afternoon drive will have a new sound beginning next week: Susie Wargin, 9News sports anchor who earlier announced her intention to leave broadcasting, will instead spread her workload across media platforms. Wargin will join Dave Logan on KOA on an afternoon news-talk show (not sports), from 3-5 p.m. She replaces Dave Krieger, former Denver Post sports columnist and KOA co-host, whose last day on the air was Monday.

The station’s aim is to broaden the show to a more general news and information format. Going forward, “it is definitely not a sports talk show,” according to KOA program director Greg Foster.

The newly retitled “Colorado’s Afternoon News” will debut Monday, June 16, 3-7 p.m. featuring discussion of the day’s top stories and interviews with newsmakers. Following the Wargin and Logan huddle, the 5-7 p.m. hours will be all-news, co-anchored by Susan Witkin and Mike Rice.

We’ll see how straying from their afternoon sports niche works for KOA.

Additionally, Wargin has re-upped with 9News as a part-timer, filing “several dozen assignments per year,” mostly Broncos-related. She had previously said she intended to leave 9News to go into her mother’s real estate business.

For his part, Krieger says he plans to “chill and then see what’s out there.” The respected sports writer and talker was hired as full-time co-anchor at KOA in January 2012 after working part-time before that.

KOA's cancellation of Dave Logan's sports talk show proved, ironically, his immense popularity as a broadcasting personality.

But it also served as a reminder that traditional AM radio, in Denver and nationally, continues to lose listeners to FM programming.

The 3-7 p.m. weekday series is being replaced, beginning Monday, by the "Colorado Afternoon News," a program similar in format to the station's weekday morning series.

Logan remains the key ingredient, teaming with Susie Wargin of KUSA-Channel 9 sports in the important 3-5 p.m. block providing news, weather, traffic and sports. They will not take listeners' calls.

KOA staffers Susan Witkin and Mike Rice take over from 5-7 p.m.

Why the change?

The show, in which Logan teamed with Dave Krieger, a former sports columnist at The Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News) was not a sports talk audience ratings champion in its time period, finishing second behind Alfred Williams and Darren McKee on 104.3 FM — The Fan in the key, 25-54 male demographic.

And KOA executives (a.k.a. Clear Channel Communications) seemingly feel a four-hour news block will be more in concert with daytime news and talk shows such as those featuring Rush Limbaugh and Mike Rosen.

But as several local broadcasters note, AM radio revenues and ratings are down in all day parts. Clear Channel must believe the best chance for AM profits to rise is to use a news-political talk format throughout the day.

Programming quality was never an issue on "The Dave Logan Show."

Logan and Krieger were an excellent team, communicating strongly with listeners on all things sports, but particularly on the Broncos, almost a religious subject.

Logan's career as an athlete and broadcaster (at KOA since 1990) and Krieger's valuable sportswriting background gave the program a personal, balanced and informative feel.

They communicated on human levels — an important attribute in talk radio.

While Logan was not available for comment, sources said he was not happy with the decision, as he found out about the change Wednesday while doing a solo broadcast. His final comments on that show before 6 p.m. showed he was irritated.

A Rockies game dominated the KOA Thursday afternoon schedule and Mark Johnson, KOA sports director, filled in Friday, giving bare essentials about the change.
