Lindsay Vonn won’t be a competitor at the Sochi Olympics, but don’t count her out just yet as a TV presence on NBC.
The network knows it potentially lost a chunk of the audience when the Colorado skier dropped out of the competition due to an injury. Vonn isn’t just an athlete and photogenic Olympian, she’s a celebrity across the popular culture. Prettier than Shaun White, more articulate than the bevy of young gymnasts.

NBC concedes she won’t be ready to work fulltime as an on-air commentator so soon after her knee injury. But it sounds like discussions are ongoing as NBC tries to figure out how to get a glimpse of Vonn on their air during the ratings-rich broadcasts, which begin Feb. 6.
Based on comments by NBC Olympics producer Jim Bell, Vonn could show up in some form — whether waving as a celebrity or giving an interview as a former gold medalist. Don’t put it past NBC to dispatch a camera from KUSA to Vonn’s Vail home for a fireside chat.

Colorado’s Lindsay Vonn may be out of the athletic competition at the Sochi Olympics, and she won’t travel there, but she’ll be part of the coverage, serving as a correspondent for “Today” and NBC Sports.
NBC announced Monday that Vonn “will report daily from the U.S. for TODAY, and she will contribute to NBC Sports Olympic coverage. As the Games unfold, Vonn will share her unique perspective on the events and the competition from an Olympian’s point of view.” She’ll begin Tuesday Jan. 28 in New York, giving “Today” her first interview since she withdrew from the Games due to an injury, giving an update on her condition, training and rehabilitation.
NBC also will use Vonn as a social media draw, doing a Q&A on Facebook in real time at Facebook.com/NBCOlympics. “The timing of this Facebook chat will be announced at a later date.”
