Melody Mendez, formerly Fox31 Denver
A certain corner of Denver TV is seeing sudden turnover. Why are they fleeing Fox31 and Channel 2? Either it’s a terrific springboard to bigger things or there’s some malfunction at sister stations KDVR-KWGN.
Melody Mendez? Gone to the Fox station in Chicago, WFLD, where she’ll co-anchor the morning show, “Good Day Chicago.” Nick Emmons? Gone to WHDH Boston, the NBC affiliate, as anchor and reporter. Jacki Jing? The former KWGN morning traffic reporter left for the Fox station in Cincinnati, WXIX, as morning anchor.
“We’re a little thin right now,” said KDVR-KWGN news boss Ed Kosowski.
In fact, they’re using some solo anchors, doubling up assignments and have no permanent Saturday anchors. Kosowski notes those who’ve left have jumped to larger markets or (in Jing’s case) to a bigger job in a smaller market. All the positions have been posted; he’s looking locally and nationally for replacements. The departures don’t relate to the sale of the station (owned by Local TV LLC and put up for sale in March by parent Oak Hill Capital Partners) or to cutbacks, he said.
Word is, there are a number of open slots behind the camera, too, in promotion, production, etc. Who’s next? Tom Green is said to be looking around town, talking to folks in TV and radio. Nobody’s talking on the record, but he would be a huge loss, given that he’s the soul Channel 2, the bright spot of “Daybreak,” the best aspect of mornings on either station.
The departures probably are unrelated to the impending sale. It’s more likely staffers are concerned, two years into the current news administration, that the stations haven’t turned the ratings around.
