Wheeler spent 42 years of his 46 year career in Peoria. He started his career at WKRS Waukegan IL before coming to Peoria in 1981 as a host at CHR “KZ 93” WKZW. After leaving in 1986 to spend a year at WGCL Cleveland, he would return to WKZW in 1987 eventually rising to Program Director through its format changes to Hot AC “Mix 93.3” and “Big Oldies 93.3” WPBG. In 2006, he joined Christian AC 91.5 WCIC as Operations Director and spent time in mornings and afternoons under the on-air name Rob Brown through 2015. After a brief retirement and spending time tracking mornings for Full Power Radio’s “Kool Oldies (https://www.koololdiesradio.net)” stations in southern New England, Wheeler joined the now Midwest Communications cluster first hosting afternoons on Oldies “SuperHits 102.7 (https://1027superhits.com)” 1290 WIRL and then relaunching the “KZ” brand on 102.3 WKZF as PD/afternoon host (https://radioinsight.com/headlines/182260/g102-3-peoria-gives-way-to-retro-hits-kz102-3/) in 2019 and moving into a consultant role last fall.
