The new visual identity is based around the gold on black license plates issued by the state of California between 1963 and 1968. The plates have also been issued on a specialty basis since 2015. The logo also bares a resemblance to one used by “K-West 106 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn8eoR8xeB8)” 105.9 KWST in the late 70s.
KRTH had used a variation of its previous logo since the late 1970s with the only major change being the removal of its “Earth” iconography in 2013.
