Gates’ wife and longtime co-host Julie Gates wrote, “It is with profound sadness I share that Gene took his life on June 15, 2023. This has been a heartbreaking loss. The place he felt most alive was behind the microphone. As a radio broadcaster, Gene loved starting everyone?s day with a laugh. But he also leapt into action when there was a community need, like when an animal shelter needed help securing forever homes for its dogs and cats after a devastating fire. Or, when a New Orleans mom evacuated to Dallas from Hurricane Katrina, but was in need of everything from a fork to a mattress to start her family?s new life. Gene compassionately pulled people together to help others, whether it was through the radio show, his marketing/podcasting clients, or his restaurants.”
Gates last served as Program Director and morning host of Capitol Broadcasting AC “Mix 101.5” WRAL-FM Raleigh from 2014-16 (https://radioinsight.com/headlines/107735/gene-julie-exit-mix-101-5-raleigh/). Since then he has owned a podcasting and marketing strategy business. He and Julie were previously heard on KOSO Modesto, KPEK Albuquerque, KBFB Dallas, KZLA Los Angeles, KIOI and KZQZ San Francisco, WLTM Atlanta, and most notably spent eight years in mornings at KVIL Dallas from 2005-13.
