The new brand is positioning as “The #1 Hit Music Station” and featuring music from the 90s through now. WHBQ-FM was previously CHR for sixteen years until flipping to Classic Hits (https://radioinsight.com/headlines/198674/whbq-fm-memphis-flips-to-classic-hits/) in September 2020. The station had begun trending up in the ratings the past two months (https://radioinsight.com/ratings/memphis/) rising 1.0 – 1.8 – 2.2.
APD/MD Joe Mack continues as afternoon host and Syd Neighbors will continue to host middays. WHBQ-FM has dropped Rick Dees’ “Daily Dees” from mornings with the change.
Following WHBQ-FM’s dropping of CHR, Flinn relaunched the format on 1430 WOWW and translators most recently as “B97.7 (https://b977memphis.com)” which currently has a 0.5 share. The market also is served by iHeartMedia’s “101.9 Kiss-FM (https://1019kissfm.iheart.com)” KWNW, which had a 1.1 share in the March 2023 Nielsen Audio ratings.
