Ana Cabrera, 7News anchor, rumored to be jumping to new CNN Denver bureau
Rumors are flying that Ana Cabrera, 7News early morning anchor, will depart KMGH for the new CNN Denver bureau — a new domestic bureau that has been a long time coming and which would be a significant addition to the regional news scene.
CNN currently has 36 bureaus (10 domestic, 26 international), and is expected to add to that number. An announcement is anticipated Monday.
Remember network news bureaus? In the late 1980s, ABC had a full bureau in Denver and NBC had Roger O’Neill based here, 1983-96. Until recently, PBS had a lively Denver operation (http://blogs.denverpost.com/ostrow/2013/06/11/pbs-newshour-closes-denver-office-amid-layoffs/14897/) around the “NewsHour,” shuttered July 1 in a round of layoffs. Now ABC has a regional digital reporter, Clayton Sandell, who works out of Channel 7. And the rest of the network bureaus have gone the way of lead type.
CNN setting up a regional base here would be a promising shift in direction. A Denver native, Cabrera has been with KMGH since 2009. Again, awaiting confirmation as of Thursday evening.
Now the confirmed churn in the market:
Jace Larsen, 9News investigative reporter, will jump to Houston, a bigger market and NBC affiliate KPRC.
9News reporter Todd Walker is leaving for Nashville.
Weekend morning anchor Evrod Cassimy of CBS4 will become weekday morning anchor at WDIV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit.
Sports anchor Gary Miller, who departed CBS4 after 22 years, is succeeded by Tom Helmer, formerly of Root Sports.
Tak Landrock, former investigative reporting producer for 7News, hired by Fox31 to do on-air reporting.
