9News has a fitting replacement for “Meet the Press” which is on hiatus this Sunday: “Balance of Power: The Governors” at 9 a.m. brings together 36 years’ worth of Colorado leadership to talk shop. Richard Lamm (1975-87), Roy Romer (1987-99), Bill Owens (1999-2007) and Bill Ritter (2007-11) exchange ideas on gun control, gay marriage, marijuana, drought, education, campaign spending and other issues. Current Gov. John Hickenlooper was unavailable for the taping. The only other Colorado governor still living, John D. Vanderhoof (1973-75), couldn’t make it due to health issues.
The discussion moderated by Kyle Clark ventures into personal memories (Ritter misses being Governor “every single day” but doesn’t regret stepping away from a candidacy), and the unspoken rule of non-interference with the next person in office (Owens recalls seeking advice from his predecessors when the Columbine massacre occurred early on his watch.)
They consider issues of the future as well. What does a Colorado estimated to have 7.7 million people in 2040 look like? “It’s thirsty,” Lamm says. “We’ve built a Los Angeles of the Rockies and I think we could have done better.”
Not only is the hour fascinating for viewers and local political junkies but, in media terms, it’s a great example of Clark’s potential. The new 9News 10 p.m. co-anchor demonstrates ease and mastery in front of the camera.
