Denver’s morning TV battle, with new faces (http://www.denverpost.com/television/ci_23210819/britt-moreno-brooke-wagner-tom-green-and-denvers) in new places this month, was won by KMGH at the early 4:30 a.m. hour and by KUSA at the 6 a.m. hour leading into the network wake-up shows.
Longtime market leader 9News has shown vulnerability in the early morning (http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_22069350/channel-7-overtakes-channel-9-denvers-morning-tv) since last year, but continues to rule from 6-7 a.m. among adults 25-54, Monday-Friday:
KUSA 2.2 rating, 23 share
KMGH 1.3 rating, 13 share
KWGN 1.0 rating, 10 share
CBS4 0.8 rating, 8 share
KDVR 0.3 rating, 4 share
CBS4 posted a significant gain (up 27% at 6 a.m. compared to last year). Nationally “CBS This Morning” likewise had a double-digit increase.
CBS4 also rode to primetime dominance on the strength of the surging CBS network numbers.
At 10 p.m. it’s a battle for second place with 9News continuing out front and by a larger margin. The late news race looked like this, adults 25-54, M-F:
KUSA 4.1 rating, 14 share
KMGH 2.3 rating, 8 share
CBS4 2.1 rating, 7 share
KDVR 0.7 rating, 2 share. Note, Fox31′s late at 9 p.m. beats CBS4 with a 2.3 rating, 6 share.
Even though local TV viewing levels are measured daily, broken down by demographics and sliced/diced year round, May still provides a temperature-taking of the local market. For comparison, here’s a snapshot from last May, (http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_20701794/kusa-wins-tightening-may-sweeps-by-one-rating) when CBS4 and KMGH were in different places and KUSA had a narrower lead.
