NBC skips 9/11 moment of silence, defends decision

NBC is under fire for broadcasting a Kardashian interview at the same time rival networks carried solemn memorials of the 9/11 attacks on American soil 11 years ago.

While ABC’s “Good Morning America” and CBS’ “CBS This Morning” stayed with moments of silence at 8:48 a.m. ET Tuesday (as did the major cable news outlets), NBC’s “Today” talked about breast implants with the Kardashian matriarch.

NBC explained it aired other segments on “Today” about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, including an interview with a World Trade Center survivor. And MSNBC reran the entire 9/11/01 “Today” coverage. Tuesday’s West Coast feed of “Today” did show the commemoration of the first moment of the attacks.

In Denver, KUSA general manager Mark Cornetta said, “I never want to second-guess the network.”

He’ll leave that to those of us who do it for a living. What a wrong-headed decision by NBC. Disrespectful and out of touch at best, craven commercialism at the worst.

NBC knows (sadly) that a large percentage of their Today show audience is more interested in Kardashian body parts than world events. Even sadder is that these people will still vote.

NBC sent a memo to its affiliates on Wednesday, quietly, tepidly and only internally apologizing for its bad call regarding the commemoration of 9/11. KUSA General Manager Mark Cornetta confirmed the network sent an apology to station managers.

The network’s “Today” on Tuesday cut away from the memorial marking the moment when the terrorist attacks began 11 years ago–while both CBS and ABC morning shows and the major cable news networks stayed focused on the moment of silence. Adding insult to injury, “Today” busied itself with an interview with the Kardashian matriarch.

In a note to station managers, NBC News President Steve Capus allowed that the bad call “touched a nerve” with viewers. But Capus stopped short of issuing a public apology. The network, which sends a steady stream of press releases touting its shows, bookings, ratings and management shifts, did not issue a statement about its actions.
