The first Cronkite Awards for fact checking (http://www.cronkiteaward.org/)in political TV coverage singled out two Denver TV efforts for honors: 7News’ Marshall Zelinger and the 9News political team were recognized by the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California today.
KUSA’s Brandon Rittiman, Matt Flener and Chris Vanderveen won for their 44 “Truth Tests.” The jury noted “the skill with which (the team) minimized the impact of the visuals in the analyzed ads and the on-air/online synergy created by posting the analyses and supporting articles and sources on 9news.com.”
KMGH’s Zelinger won for the depth of his reporting and for his “clarity of presentation” and “modern production techniques.”
By now viewers may have succeeding in wiping from memory the pain of the political season. Perhaps we’ve forgotten the barrage of misinformation and disinformation that spewed from the tube. But these honors show there was strong work in the midst of the confusing claims. The awards overall, “proving that political coverage can be both informative and compelling,” honor efforts of the 2011-12 election cycle.
