From Radio Insight: The Estate of Bob Bittner will shut down Soft Oldies “Bob’s Memories Station” 750 WJTO/105.3 W287DD Bath and 1470 WLAM/97.3 W247DK Lewiston ME on Sunday, April 13 at 11:59pm. Those two stations and 870 WLVP/105.1 W286DR Gorham/Portland, which went silent last October (although no STA is on file at the FCC) had continued the listener supported programming that Bittner previously ran on a network in Massachusetts and Maine. The current programming will also keep streaming and be heard on 102.3 WGTX-HD3 Truro/106.5 W293DW-HD3 West Yarmouth MA on Cape Cod. A similarly programmed format continues on 720 WJIB/101.3 W267CE Cambridge/Boston under John Garabedian, who purchased WJIB from Bittner’s estate last year. Operator/Programmer Bob Perry wrote, “On Sunday April 13th at 11:59PM ,WJTO AM 750/FM 105.3 and WLAM 1470/FM 97.3 will be signing off permanently. We have tried to keep the stations going, but the cost of operating and maintaining the stations has just become too much, and more than the generous donations can cover! It was a very hard and emotional decision to make and wasn’t made lightly. We do want to thank all of you who have donated and kept us going this far. We have been holding the recent checks we have received. If you would like them returned please contact Bob Perry. If you would like us to divert your donation to the Streaming Service, that would be very much appreciated.” more

From Radio Insight: After ten years at Good Karma News/Talk 620 WTMJ Milwaukee, Brian Noonan has exited. Noonan joined WTMJ in 2016 and hosted “WTMJ At Night” from 2019 until moving to co-host the 1-3pm ?Spanning The State? with Kristen Brey last April. Noonan has also spent nearly 15 years at 720 WGN Chicago from 2006-21 and has worked as a television and stage actor, stand-up comedian, and substitute teacher. Noonan shared over the weekend, “After my show on Friday, I was informed that I was being “sun downed” at Newsradio 620 WTMJ which in plain English means I was let go. It’s a common, but painful truth about the radio industry. I’m still in shock and not clear on all the reasons, but grateful to have worked at this heritage radio station in various capacities for over a decade. What’s next? Well, Crafty Brewers: Tales Behind Craft Beer will continue, but other than that*stay tuned.” more

You want to keep it going.” KNBR has ALWAYS been your home for Giants baseball, and it will continue to be through an incredible 50th season! From Radio Insight: I never want to schedule ?Hero? by Enrique Iglesias. It usually brings to mind 9/11, when it became a hit, often interspersed with audio from the tragedy. I am never quite sure whether to gradually slow down the radio station to keep the transition from being abrupt, or hope a jingle alone lets people forget they were just listening to ?Girls Just Want to Have Fun.?* In general, the ?00s category is, if not the weakest moment of the hour on an AC station, the most challenging. For music and radio historians, the early ?00s don?t rankle quite as much as the beginning of previous decades. If you lived through the early ?80s or ?90s, you knew that Top 40 was down, but not likely out. Teen pop and Modern AC, twin pillars of Top 40?s comeback a few years ago, were essentially merged. Teen acts endured; they were just encouraged not to have fun. Much of the early ?00s is wearing surprisingly well now ? back on the handful of ?90s/?00s throwback stations and in surprisingly deep CHR throwback categories. In that time, R&B, Hip-Hop, Linkin Park, and teen punk meant that CHR had something to play, if not necessarily something to own. But many of the highlights of the era aren?t the songs on AC. When the ?00s roll around, you might hear ?Yeah? by Usher, or ?Here Without You? by 3 Doors Down, ?Family Affair? by Mary J. Blige or ?If You?re Gone? by Matchbox Twenty. ?Toxic? by Britney Spears or ?Bad Day? by Daniel Powter. ?Before He Cheats? by Carrie Underwood or ?I Hope You Dance? by Lee Ann Womack. It?s not that all of those aren?t songs people love that continue to earn their place on the radio. But half of them feel particularly savorless on a format increasingly imaged around ?feel good,? not just ?variety.? Sometimes the contradictions are within the same artist?s catalog: ?Since U Been Gone? by Kelly Clarkson or ?Because of You.? ?This Love? by Maroon 5 or ?She Will Be Loved.? ?So What?? by Pink or ?Sober.? The Timbaland production can be ?Say It Right? by Nelly Furtado or ?Apologize? featuring OneRepublic.* As TV and movie music supervisors start to exert their influence in the mid-?00s, you start to hear their contributions: ?How to Save a Life? by the Fray or ?Chasing Cars? by Snow Patrol. Those songs have hipper credentials and more passion ? if you haven?t thus far objected ?but people love these songs,? you probably are now. They?re easier to finesse than ?Hero.? If you played ?You?re Beautiful? by James Blunt 20 minutes earlier, they don?t feel different enough. Depending on how your categories are structured (and if they?re chronological to begin with), your ?00s titles are likely helped by the transition from turgid pop to turbo-pop. To research music in the late ?00s/early ?10s was to see the always reliable ballads from Nickelback and Creed quickly evaporate over the course of a few tests, replaced by Katy Perry and Rihanna. For a moment, the music seemed to not just reflect an improved national mood but drive one. Without disputing the legitimacy of individual songs, I feel the ?00s category dragging stations down more in my monitoring. Perhaps I?m encountering a station that swapped an ?80s position for a newer one, putting greater pressure on a category that didn?t feel deep to start with. Perhaps it?s also because some of those songs are making their way into Classic Hits. Or because they manage to come up near songs of even greater legitimacy but equal somberness from adjacent eras ? ?Iris? on one side, ?Someone Like You? on the other.* If you find the ?00s category frustrating, it will likely morph as more of the rhythmic ?90s test in, perhaps helped by hearing those songs again elsewhere. Like ?No Scrubs? by TLC before it, ?1,2 Step? by Ciara won?t be a Mainstream AC record until it suddenly is. (Like ?No Scrubs? before it, some stations will probably play it with the rap ? some by choice, some by not knowing which version to add to the library.) The ?00s could sound better on AC radio just by being better balanced. I?ve often thought that gold-based radio stations need not just tempo and energy codes for library titles, but also to take into account when songs are ?fun? or not. If you are of the belief that music scheduling should rely on rules or AI and less on a programmer?s individual judgment calls, I can tell you from recent listening that we aren?t there yet.* more

From Radio Insight: The car is changing fast. Touchscreens. Voice control. Personalised recommendations. Listeners expect the same seamless experience they get from streaming platforms ? but still turn to radio for trusted content, companionship, and relevance. The question is: how do we protect that strength, and grow it, in the connected dashboards of today and tomorrow? Here are three key areas where broadcasters can take action right now ? and a glimpse of where we?re heading next. 1. Prioritize metadata ? it?s your station?s shop window. In a screen-driven environment, metadata is more than decoration ? it?s discoverability. Stations without logos, artwork, or program information are easy to scroll past. That?s a lost opportunity, especially when your competitors are just a swipe away. Supplying high-quality, accurate, and up-to-date metadata ensures your station looks great in the car ? and helps keep listeners engaged, and it’s something you already generate. Tip: Check what your station looks like in the dashboard. If the visuals are missing or out of date, fix it fast. Radioplayer can help you maximize your existing metadata. 2. Embrace hybrid delivery ? be everywhere your listener is.* Modern vehicles don?t rely on a single distribution method. They combine traditional broadcasting with IP delivery to ensure the listener always gets the best possible experience. But that only works if your station provides reliable, resilient streams alongside your broadcast signal. Tip: Talk to your team about how your content is being delivered in connected cars. It?s not just about signal ? it?s about staying present and available, no matter where or how people listen. 3. Own your identity ? and guide listeners to your ecosystem. Discovery in the car is evolving. Voice, search, and content recommendations are becoming the norm. Make sure your station?s presence in the car connects directly to your wider digital offering. Don?t let platforms own the relationship ? you should. See it in action ? at NAB Las Vegas. Radioplayer will be at NAB Show Las Vegas this April, showcasing a prototype of the connected car radio experience of tomorrow ? built with a radio-first approach, we?ll show how broadcasters can thrive in the modern dashboard. Find us at Booth W2669 or make an appointment here. We work in partnership with 15 major car brands and counting, helping them access the trusted dynamic metadata they need to deliver a world-class radio experience. That means your station can be more visible, more discoverable, and you more in control. Let?s keep radio strong in the car. And let?s shape its future ? together. From Radio Insight: With Mike McConnell’s retirement on Friday, April 4, iHeartMedia News/Talk 700 WLW Cincinnati has quickly moved to introduce its new morning host. Longtime sportscaster Thom Brennaman will take over mornings at WLW starting Monday, April 7, Brennaman, whose father Marty Brennaman called Cincinnati Reds games on WLW from 1974 until 2019, began his career as morning sportscaster at WLW in the late 1980s. Ht then followed his father into sports play-by-play spending time with the Chicago Cubs from 1990-95, Arizona Diamondbacks from 1998-2006, and the Reds from 2007 to 2020 until being fired for a homophobic slur on a hot mic during a broadcast. He also called MLB and the NFL for FOX Sports from its launch in 1994 until the 2020 incident. He would return to sportscasting last fall broadcasting college football and basketball for the CW, which he will continue to do. He told WLW listeners, “The journey here the last four years, almost five, hadn’t been easy. But if there’s somebody out there, once a day, once a week, once a month, that thinks they screwed up really bad, maybe I can somehow along the way, try to make them understand that you keep the faith, you keep on getting up and hopefully good things are going to happen. And this is a really good thing.” Brennaman becomes just the third morning host at WLW in the past 40+ years. Jim Scott anchored the daypart from 1984 until 2015 and McConnell since then. more
