From Radio Insight: It took until nearly the end of 2024 for one of the biggest deals of the year to go down with Educational Media Foundation literally going fishing to acquire the majority of Salem Media Group’s Christian AC stations that mostly operate under the “Fish” brand. The deal will allow EMF to bring its “K-Love” network into many of the remaining large markets it had been either completely absent or relying on small translators or rimshots to serve or introduce or upgrade its “Air 1” and potentially recently acquired “Radio Nueva Vida“. From its launch of the first “Fish” KFSH in suburban Los Angeles in 2000 followed by the subsequent acquisition of KLTY Dallas later that year, Salem quickly established itself as one of the largest players in the Christian AC format with the company expanding it to nearly a dozen markets at its peak until the company began selling off the stations in 2023. By the late 2000s, EMF began its rapid expansion nationally, while other regional players such as Way-FM, both Family Life’s, Northwestern Media and Radio Training Network would grow as well. With Salem exiting the space, very few commercial Christian AC multi-market operators will remain. Pillar Media operating in Cincinnati, Denver, and suburban New York City being perhaps the largest. This is the third deal between the groups in the past seventeen months. EMF previously acquired three stations in Greenville/Spartanburg SC from Salem in August 2023 and then stations in Nashville and Honolulu in March. Another “Fish“, KKSP Little Rock was sold to the unrelated Educational Radio Foundation of East Texas that has begun expanding beyond its region. Here’s how the new acquisitions impact each market? AtlantaBy way of also becoming the market’s defacto secular Christmas music station, Salem’s “104.7 The Fish” WFSH-FM is one of the jewels of this acquisition. “K-Love” entered the market in 2019 on 106.7 WAKL thanks to its largest single acquisition of stations from Cumulus, but WFSH-FM remained a regular top 10 station in the market year-round and usually #1 in the Holiday monthly. The deal will allow “Air 1” to gain a full-market signal as opposed to its current home on 92.3 W222AF Marietta, which is one of the best performing coverage-wise translators in the city. The loss of local programming on the Fish will likely open the door for someone else to claim the Christmas music mantle in 2025. In a market without a full-powered Classic Hits or Hot AC station, any audience loss from WFSH to a secular station could lead to further changes in the market in a way that is doubtful in most of the other markets. ClevelandBoth of EMF’s primary brands are currently on translators in Cleveland and adjacent Akron. Now the organization adds what an in-market PD calls the best signal in the market for “K-Love“. Colorado Springs“Q102.7” KBIQ predates Salem’s acquisition launching on 96.1 in 1993 before moving to 102.7 a few years later. “K-Love” is currently on rimshot 106.9 KLCX mostly covering Pueblo and area south, translator 103.1 K276GG in the city proper, and 90.1 KLDV Denver covering areas to the north. “Air 1” is on one of the few AMs owned by EMF 780 KJME as well as its translator 96.5 K243AM. DallasThis is the big fish nabbed by EMF and it doesn’t even use the “Fish” branding. Since acquiring the KLUV call letters and the rights to the “K-Love” brand in the Dallas area from Audacy, it has been a matter of when, not if the organization enters the final top 10 market it does not operate in. In 94.9 KLTY Arlington, EMF gets the a brand that is one of the regular top performers in any format in the market. KLTY originally debuted on 94.9 in 1985 before its format would be relaunched and moved to 94.1 KOJO the following year before being able to claim the KLTY calls back in 1989. Salem would acquire the brand in January 2000 and first moved it to its rimshot on 100.7 before it moved back to its original home in December 2000. Dallas is also the most crowded market for Christian AC. In the just released December 2024 monthly, KLTY was eighth in the market with a 3.7 share. EMF’s “Air 1” on rimshot 101.7 KYDA has set a record high share for three consecutive months rising to a 3.5. First Dallas Media’s 90.9 KCBI-FM had a 2.4 share, while Hope Media Group’s “89.7 Way-FM” KAWA has slid recently down to a 1.2. If EMF had acquired any other station in the market, it would have made sense to place the KLUV call letters on it for their legacy in the market. However, KLTY means much more to the audience even if just heard once an hour. Los AngelesWith its deal to share the “K-Love” brand in Southern California with Univision’s established Spanish AC “107.5 K-Love” KLVE, EMF cannot market 100.3 KKLQ as “K-Love” directly. Instead all advertising says just “Positive & Encouraging 100.3“, while its legal ID calls it “K-Love For Christian Music“. With its full market signal, KKLQ’s 1.6 share in December outranked “95.9 The Fish” KFSH’s Orange County centered 0.7 share throughout the Los Angeles market. “Air 1” currently airs on a network of signals including trimulcast 92.7 KYLA covering Orange County, KYRA in the northwest San Fernando Valley, and KYZA in the High Desert as well as translators 91.9 K220HC in the San Fernando Valley and 92.7 K224EY in parts of LA proper. Those combined for a 0.6 share. This could lead to a big upgrade for “Radio Nueva Vida” which is on 91.1 K216EM which covers a fair share of the market from Mount Wilson, but not Orange County. Portland“104.1 The Fish” KFIS usually gains notoriety for being one of the first stations each year to go all-Christmas as it made the move this year on Halloween. But it doesn’t make much of an impact up against iHeartMedia AC “K103” KKCW as its 1.6 share this month trailed KKCW’s market-leading 10.8 share. EMF already has “K-Love” on a stronger signal as 97.9 KLVP is a Class C1 to KFIS’s Class 2. “Air 1” operates on rimshot 88.7 KZRI and a pair of translators making it likely to be upgraded. EMF may end up with an extra signal as it already has Radio Nueva Vida and Christian Hip Hop “Boost Radio” on owned translators. Sacramento“103.9 The Fish” KKFS Lincoln gives EMF another rimshot in Sacramento. KKFS seems targeted for “Air 1” to pair with northern rimshot 99.1 KARA. “K-Love” is on 99.5 KLVB, which covers more of Sacramento proper, as well as southern rimshot 89.7 KLRS. What’s Next For EMFShockingly there are still markets where “K-Love” has little or no coverage including PPM markets such as Baltimore, Orlando, St. Louis, and Tampa or are on rimshots that could use upgrading such as Charlotte and Miami. Some of those are markets where previously EMF would hesitate from entering due to another well-established non-commercial player in the format, but those days have ended. There’s also room to keep growing the other networks. However, there is reason to believe that EMF may not be as aggressive as it used to be. After being very quiet earlier this year on the acquisition front, the deal with Salem is the largest use of a promissory note by the organization to spread out payments over time. Is it simply a more corporatized approach by using debt to build equity or to simply spread out the cash outlay following the costly construction of its new Franklin TN headquarters and either relocating or replacing its former Rocklin CA staff. What’s Next For SalemThe sale of the music stations, new investor, and elimination of debt more-or-less completes Salem’s conversion from a Christian focused media company into a more digital and politically focused one. After selling many of non-core assets in recent years such as its publishing and church products, Salem retains its Conservative Talk stations and mostly time-brokered preaching stations many of which are on AMs that continue to decline in valuation that have brought Salem’s financials down as they took annual write-downs, which is why they are placing more emphasis on its streaming video Salem News Channel, podcasts, influencer marketing, and other digital services targeting Christian and right-wing audiences. For the past several months, rumors circulated that Salem would consider selling all of their major market FMs to pay down its debt. The new investment on top of the EMF deal brings an end to that necessity, but there are still a few non-core question marks that could still be divested. What happens now to Salem’s “Salem Music Network” division? Many of the programs were based at the stations being sold or its former Nashville cluster. One Christian AC remains with Salem as “95.9 The Fish” W240CX Columbus OH was not part of the deal. And how does owning a pair of Regional Mexican stations in “93.1 El Rey” KRYP and “1640 La Patrona” KDZR in Portland fit in with Salem’s core businesses? The remaining radio stations at least provide major market clearances for Salem’s syndication units and whose voices power the digital brands the company is emphasizing now so those provide synergy for now. But as more of the audience pivots completely away from the mostly AM signals it is inevitable that the remaining properties could by divested at some point to end the write-down necessitation. more

From Radio Insight: What if a song is only a hit on the radio? Is it a hit if callout respondents like it, but it doesn’t generate streams–the industry’s current index of a “hit”? One of the gratifying developments of recent months has been the emergence of fellow Radioinsight columnist Mason Kelter as an industry voice. Kelter is the host of the nightly syndicated LiveLine. That show?s top 10 requests have become a weekly feature in Ross on Radio. Radioinsight?s weekly Mason?s Observations columnhas campaigned passionately for songs with request and streaming stories.* Over the last week a few of the songs that Kelter has most championed ? Gigi Perez?s ?Sailor Song?; the Weeknd?s ?Timeless; Chappell Roan?s ?Pink Pony Club? ? have made their way on to WHTZ (Z100) New York. At the same time, my colleague has been merciless about the songs that have neither streaming nor request stories, songs he consigns to radio?s long-accruing pile of ?turntable hits.? Some of the songs that haven?t generated requests for LiveLine have been songs that started with a streaming story, such as Addison Rae?s ?Diet Pepsi,? but trailed off eventually. Even Meghan Trainor?s ?Criminals,? a song about which Kelter is unsparing, had an exciting first few weeks thanks to Netflix?s The Perfect Couple and then-WWWQ (Q99.7) Atlanta PD Louie Diaz, whose support was enough for Epic to switch singles. Then there are also a handful of songs that don?t generate calls for LiveLine but do perform in callout research at a time when few newer songs do. Jelly Roll?s ?I Am Not Okay? is a power on the successful medium-market stations that I take very seriously, among them WIXX Green Bay, Wis.; WKRZ Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; WVSR (Electric 102) Charleston, W. Va.; and a subpower on WXLK (K92) Roanoke Va. It certainly feels like a multi-format hit. The songs driven by callout, especially on those stations, are in fact often songs with some Country-crossover aspect that have the advantage of being warmed up by market rivals. Sometimes they are heritage acts ? Eminem?s ?Houdini? was a power at many of those stations. David Guetta?s reworking of Alphaville?s ?Forever Young? generated its callout story in another way ? armed with a beloved hook, it made a surprise debut at No. 1 on Coleman Insights? national callout. Kelter sees the charts as clogged with label hype. I think there?s less of that than there used to be, if only because of shrinking departments and budget tightening. But I do see a lot of records in the top 20 in limbo ? not yet showing any real story, not yet replaced by something newer and more exciting, also because of fewer releases and budget tightening. And I think the songs that mostly strong in callout are a category unto themselves that radio needs in part because there aren’t enough songs generated by streaming alone. Although it might not seem that way from looking at the charts, labels seem less willing to chase a pure radio record, too. Mike Couchman, PD of Christian AC KLJY (Joy 96) and Christian Hip-Hop KXBS (Boost Radio) St. Louis, writes, ?Labels seem to crave a day when there are no such thing as turntable hits. They think we?ll all be better off if radio rotates only what their streaming data validates as hits ? if a song is top-testing at radio, but not moving either of the other needles , it?s a dud from the label?s POV. ?I can?t help but wonder if turntable hits have enormous value to radio, though? From my formative years to today, certain songs are staples of radio across all formats. They?re songs I never sought out when I bought music, yet I have nothing for love but them anyhow. Will radio hurt itself if it chooses to embrace the label community?s skepticism of turntable hits? Or are good ?radio songs? a relic that we need to let go of as we adapt to changing times?? It shouldn?t have to be an either-or discussion. I?m excited about requests stats being back in the music meeting. I?m happy when streaming hits sound good on the radio ? even those such as ?Million Dollar Baby? that seem initially daunting to PDs. And I?m excited when callout confirms a new hit, rather than clog the top of the charts with older ones. Radio needs all its hits. I would never begrudge the ones that are only radio hits, as long as there?s some story. ?Forever Young? is growing respectably ? the No. 8 greatest gainer this week. Because of the emphasis on streaming and TikTok that Couchman describes, there?s not quite the same sort of immediate ratification that there was when, say, Green Day?s ?When I Come Around? debuted at No. 1 in the now-defunct trade publication R&R?s Callout America and became a CHR hit within minutes. I see it as a valuable record, in part because of my longtime appreciation of that song?s stealth pop-culture impact over 40 years. Beyond the songs that have some story, I do see a lot of records in the top 20 in limbo. Was ?Dancing in the Flames? by the Weeknd, quickly upstaged by ?Timeless,? worth investing more than three months? I heard stories of eventual callout in some places, but now it?s peaked at No. 6. Maybe there?s room to nurture 1-2 songs that might pull through. There?s not room for a dozen of them. Both Mike Castellucci and Matt Bailey note that airplay seldom makes streaming rebound, although it can drive streams on songs like “Good Luck Babe” that are still new to many listeners. Part of what makes the songs in limbo so frustrating is the time it takes for them to play out. The chain reaction of more passive listeners and CHR?s diminished reach is not just that it takes longer to confirm songs as callout hits, but also that it takes longer to be sure that a song will not be. I?d be less frustrated by the songs that claw their way to the top 10 if they got there quickly. For that to happen, radio would have to spin new songs more, and there would have to be something to replace those songs once we know they won?t go any higher. More radio product, allowed to run its course more quickly, is unlikely under the current label paradigm. Some label people have said to me that lack of a concrete payoff from airplay ? as opposed to streaming ? is the stopper. But even without a performance royalty, labels are usually sharing in songwriting royalties. It?s not as if there?s no incentive to have a radio hit. I?m also surprised that radio isn?t more interested in flexing and showing its impact. But if there?s no enterprise, then there?s less chance of a pure radio hit developing. There are really three different definitions of ?turntable hit? at play here. For Kelter, it?s a pejorative for any passive record, regardless of whether there?s another story. For Couchman, it?s a callout-only title. I still use it to mean those tempo songs that just sounded good on the radio. Few of our struggling songs are, say, ?Don?t Wanna Fall in Love? by Jane Child, which I still put in the ?smile because it happened? category. Playing songs for that reason is a programmers’ indulgence, but “just play the hits, even if it’s Hozier for eight months” hasn’t helped CHR much lately. In 2025, I?ve been circling around the notion of ?what is a hit? in various ways. I appreciate readers? forbearance if these are familiar topics, but we should keep talking through them until we don?t need to. When radio has more hits, it won?t just benefit radio, it will benefit labels and radio departments as well to have a second R&D stream. Ultimately, helping listeners to enjoy a song they might not have chosen for themselves is something they need us for. We just need to decide which ones. more

From Radio Insight: Roxanne Wilder has departed Beasley Media Group Classic Hits “Q105” WRBQ-FM Tampa after nearly a decade as morning co-host and midday host. Wilder was part of the morning shows hosted by Mason Dixon and Todd ‘MJ’ Schnitt during her tenure at the station and had also recently started tracking nights on sister 105.7 WROR Boston. Prior to joining WRBQ, Wilder worked in television as an anchor and reporter for WFTS-TV and Fox Sports Florida and worked in publicity. In a post shared to social media, Wilder wrote, “I?m moving to the Bahamas?just kidding. Ahhh, but I won?t be coming back to Q105 after the holidays. Q105 and the listeners will always hold a special place in my heart. For 4 years and during both my pregnancies, I worked with radio legend, Mason Dixon. Being a part of the morning show with Mason, Bobby, and Andrew was what I can best describe as good for the soul. Andrew, thank you for meeting me at my car every single morning during both my pregnancies to carry my stuff and open doors. One of a kind human. In the fall of 2020, what a surprise to find out the legendary MJ Morning Show was coming back to Tampa, and I was going to be a part of it. We had lots of laughs?and lots of characters from Cajun Fester to Hal Herman. Speaking of Froggy, whenever he walked in the studio something (Big/Crazy/Fun) was about to happen. Good times. (Froggy, I want to be top choice on your list for a future podcast.) Whenever you leave a place of employment behind, you take nothing with you but friendships. I?m so grateful for mine. You know who you are. Our conversations meant so much to me and will hopefully continue. Pat George, thanks for keeping us fed and treating my girls like gold. They loved coming to mama?s work to see you and get treats! Geno, an honor to be your lead-in and follow you on-air in Tampa and Boston. Another co-worker doing it all like a pro and making it look easy. To my fellow morning show women down the hall on other stations: Meredith, Cristy, Launa. Soul sisters. It?s not an easy industry/shift for us with our families and workload. You all do it with grace and bad ass-ness. In awe! There?ve been moments where I?ve questioned my career choice. What kept me coming back for more is the listeners. Having someone reach out and say that they were going through tough times, but then we said something to make them laugh to take their mind momentarily off their burdens?that feels right. I never take for granted the honor of you, the listener, choosing to hear what I have to say. And my intention was always to elevate your mood?.” MJ and Dom ?Fester? Siciliano remain in mornings at WRBQ-FM. Wilder’s departure follows the exit of Michael ?Froggy? Cusmano during Beasley’s layoffs this summer. From Radio Insight: Latino Media Network has rebranded the majority of its FM music stations across its portfolio. The stations, which had retained their former Univision brands since the closing of LMN’s acquisition in 2022, have now taken on new identities. In Las Vegas, Regional Mexican “Zona MX 103.5” KISF has rebranded as “La Tremenda 103.5“. Its rebranding follows the only station of Latino Media Network to previously drop its former indentity following the sale where Spanish CHR ?Latino Mix 99.3? KRGT Sunrise Manor became “Latino Beats” on January 1, 2024. Fresno sees three rebrands. Spanish AC ?Amor 92.1? KRDA Clovis is now “92.1 Enamorada“, Spanish Classic Hits ?107.5 La Jefa? KOND Hanford changes to “La Explosiva 107.5“, and Regional Mexican ?107.9 Zona MX? KLLE North Fork has rebranded as “La Picosa 107.9“. In the Rio Grande Valley, Spanish Classic Hits ?Recuerdo 96.1? KBTQ Harlingen is now branding as “La Exitosa 96.1“, and Regional Mexican ?La Jefa 98.5? KGBT-FM McAllen has changed to “La Preferida 98.5“. The only FM of the company not showing new branding is Regional Mexican “Zona MX 99.1” KFZO Denton, which was running just music without any imaging when sampled this morning. KFZO was transferred to a separate Latino Media Holdings II earlier this year to prevent any ownership cap overlaps due to Lakestar Finance’s stake in Audacy as part of its bankruptcy restructuring. more
