From Radio Insight: Aaron MillerAudacy has announced that it has promoted Aaron Miller to SVP/Market Manager of its Sacramento cluster following the recent exit of Stacey Kauffman. Miller arrives in Sacramento from Phoenix where he has served as Director of Sales since 2019. Miller began his sales career in his native Elizabeth City NC at Thompson Publishing Company?s The Daily Advance newspaper before moving to The Progress Index in Petersburg VA. He joined then Clear Channel Rock “XL 102” WRXL Richmond as an account executive in 1996 before moving to the company’s Orlando cluster from 1998 to 2010 where he eventually rose to General Sales Manager and Local Sales Manager. He then spent nine years at Cox Tampa as GSM for 102.5 WHPT and 107.3 WXGL until joining Audacy. Miller commented, “I?m thrilled to step into this leadership role at Audacy Sacramento. With such a talented team already in place, I?m excited to work alongside them and accomplish great things together in the years to come.? Regional President Doug Abernethy said, “Aaron?s extensive experience in sales and leadership, along with his deep understanding of the broadcast media landscape, make him a sound choice to take over our Sacramento market. We are confident in Aaron?s ability to thrive in this new role, and that under his guidance, our portfolio of brands will continue to deliver exceptional results for our listeners and advertisers.? Stacey KauffmanKaufmann had been SVP/Market Manager of Audacy Sacramento since July 2018 and rose to Regional VP in May 2021 adding oversight of the company’s San Francisco cluster. She originally joined the cluster in March 2015 General Sales Manager and then Director of Sales after spending five years at Hubbard Chicago as an AE and then Local Sales Manager. Audacy also announced the promotion of Kimberli Rivera from General Sales Manager to VP/Sales in Phoenix to succeed Miller. Rivera has held multiple roles at the CBS Radio turned Audacy cluster since 2011 including Director of Live Events & Experiences, Director of Brand Partnerships, and General Sales Manager. She also held sales roles at Sandusky Radio Phoenix. more

From Radio Insight: Welcome to the second edition of Mason’s Observations, a weekly review of the songs generating real requests and positive response amongst the 500+ phone calls, texts and DMs we get weekly. Plus, we point out songs with no passion from listeners which got hyped to high chart positions which clutter the format with high tuneout potential.* Songs Worth Consideration This WeekGigi Perez – Sailor Song: Top 10 on US Spotify for the past 4 weeks, this fall-sounding love song has become a Gen Z anthem, thanks to TikTok and it’s nostalgic vibe that sounds so similar to a song we wrote about last week, “Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood. Only 24 spins on Top 40 this week (10x on Sirius XM Hits 1 and 14x on KBFF/Portland), about a dozen requests have come in to us this week even though we aren?t yet playing it. Picking up steam on Alternative (#35 this week). Chappell Roan – Pink Pony Club: #8 in requests this week, last week #9. Still not in the top 40 on CHR (currently #52) though major market airplay has picked up with KHKS/Dallas, WFLZ/Tampa and WPXY/Rochester. It’s an easy choice for her third “big single”, though first* released as one 4 years ago. See last week’s observations for our full analysis on this incredible song and artist. Is Unproven New Music Worth Playing? As mentioned by many PDs and by Sean Ross in his column last week, the steady stream of Summer?s great Pop songs has slowed down dramatically, leaving us with a stale Top 20 on Spotify and CHR, and forcing us to play either 7-month old Powers like “Espresso”, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”, and “Too Sweet”, or stuff that the labels are pushing as “hot new songs” but won’t be remembered in 6 months. Which begs the question, “What should Top 40 radio be playing in times like these?” More golds? The same songs in Power? Keeping the categories moving, no matter what the Mediabase charts show? What would YOU be playing if Mediabase (which isn’t a popularity or passion chart) didn’t exist? I would love to get YOUR insight via email, or in the comments below and will be featuring some responses next week. Upon reading our observations last week, WPIA Peoria’s Scott Hecathorn commented, “It’s interesting to see what you’re getting calls for vs. what the record labels are shoving down our throats. We’re putting in Chappell Roan (“Pink Pony Club”) and switching Weeknd tracks (the failing “Dancing With a Flames” for “Timeless”) and will hopefully figure out how to play “Bed Chem” too but right now it’s already ALL Sabrina Carpenter, all the time and I don’t know where to put another one” Buried Treasures of the WeekOne Direction – Night Changes: Last Wednesday, the passing of Liam Payne became the most talked about celebrity death of the year so far. That same night, we did a whole show featuring dozens of live callers talking about their love for Liam and 1D, while playing requests for all their biggest hits. You can hear some of them on my TikTok.* This will be a relevant story to Pop audience for the next few weeks as the toxicology report is issued and his funeral passes. Though “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Story of My Life” were their biggest radio hits, very few stations were going beyond those two songs. We’ve always gotten requests for many of their others, but 2014’s “Night Changes” seems to be the one resonating most with mourning fans. The day after Liam’s passing, it rocketed to #6 on Spotify in America (the highest of all their songs) and #2 in the world. “Story of My Life” made it to #15 (which lyrically is the most fitting song for this occasion) and “What Makes You Beautiful” didn’t even crack the Top 50. As of now and even BEFORE Liam’s passing, “Night Changes” is One Direction’s most-streamed song on Spotify. It peaked at #14 on Top 40. Eminem – Mockingbird: Originally released in 2004, this song has become a top-requested Liveline classic with requests nightly; all ages, men and women. Peaked at #6 on Top 40 and #11 on Billboard. The stories people requesting it tell about their lives are beautiful, as the song is all about Em’s daughter Hailee and her struggle of having a famous father and absent mother. It has a deep connection with people and is more popular today than it ever was. Female-friendly beat and chorus. Eminem’s fifth most-streamed song on Spotify (1.8 billion) and the second most-requested of all his music on Liveline. (“Lose Yourself” is #1).* TLC – No Scrubs: So many discussions in recent years have been about Top 40 playing songs older than a certain year, but a quarter-century is definitely pushing the limits. Released in 1999, this is one of the best performing songs in the history of the format. #1 on Billboard, Top 40 and Rhythmic where it spent 15 weeks at the top, the longest of any song ever. #2 on Billboard for the whole year. Today, it still receives significant major market airplay on Top 40 and Hot AC. As a former wedding/event DJ and Liveline host for 4 1/2 years, there isn?t a more powerful female anthem. This song has been passed down generations and Gen Z still identifies with it* We get a request and warm listener story for this song EVERY night, making it our fifth most-requested Gold ever. Last week, we crowned Justin Bieber’s “Baby” with the “all-time #1 Gold request” achievement. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Liveline with Mason more

From Radio Insight: I started going through my old ?Intriguing Stations of the Year? articles last night. I began writing those columns in 2003, but I was primarily looking for stations launched in the last 15 years that had endured. I was thinking about writing something like ?Top 10 Stations of the PPM Era.? I threw it open to Facebook friends for their nominations. I wasn?t expecting to have a ton of candidates. Many of today?s winners are still 40+-year-old brands. Radio’s PPM ratings measurement era coincided with the arrival of Pandora in the iPhone and the beginning of radio?s digital diminishment, as well as the accompanying worsening of radio?s financial issues. Plus, hadn?t PPM spurred broadcasters to create anodyne radio at the worst possible time? I?ve moved on from the top-10-stations concept. Not because I can?t find 10 stations, but because I can?t narrow them down. The Facebook posting generated about a hundred suggestions. As for my own candidates, I?m staring at a letter pad?s worth of scrawl. Those are only PPM-era launches (or, in a few cases, stations that kept their brand but significantly changed their format). It does include stations in both PPM and diary markets. The last 15 years brought us CKNO (102.3 Now) Edmonton, Alberta, the station that defied PPM logic by popularizing the ?Join the Conversation? format across Canada. That station was launched with one of radio’s last great marketing efforts, making the traction that other stations found that much more significant. The PPM era brought us WBQT (Hot 96.9) Boston, the station that finally propelled ?throwback Hip-Hop? into a format boom. WBQT?s steady numbers made it seem like an outlier amidst others that crashed quickly, but the recent success of a relaunched WJHM (102 Jamz) Orlando and WPOW (Power 96) Miami attests to the throwback format’s continued strength. The last 15 years gave us Soft AC as a successful, (mostly) sustained format with WFEZ (Easy 93) Miami,WRME (Me TV FM) Chicago,KISQ (The Breeze) San Francisco,Australia?s Smooth FMs. It’s not exactly a new brand, but the success of KISQ prompted the return of*WLIT (Lite FM) Chicago. Me TV FM was followed by stations specializing in older Oldies as well: KOAI (The Wow Factor) Phoenix,KDRI (The Drive) Tucson, Ariz.,the UK?s Boom Radio, and a station that I haven?t written about as much, but which showed up several times in my Facebook comments, WMCE Erie, Pa.WAKY Louisvillearrived slightly ahead of my time frame, but continues to defy programming law by winning with an older, broader mix. Many of the stations associated with Classic Hits? successes of the PPM era were retooled heritage outlets, but some were launched around that time or since: KXSN (Sunny 98.1) San Diego,CHBM (Boom 97.3) Toronto, KKHH (95.7 The Spot) Houston,WOCL (Sunny 105.9) Orlando,*CFXL (XL103) Calgary. That market is also home to one of the most enduring ?90s/?00s Classic Hits outlet, CHUP (C97.7). KUTX Austin, Texas, was one of several non-comm Triple-As that surprised the industry by posting non-niche numbers. KCMP (The Current) Minneapolis was already several years old by PPM. So was KEXP Seattle, but its surprise PPM success was a recent phenomenon. Readers also named Denver?s KJAC (The Colorado Sound) and KVOQ (Indie 102.3).* WBZ-FM (The Sports Hub) Boston, named by Radioinsight’s Lance Venta and numerous other readers, roughly parallels PPM. So do WXYT (The Ticket) Detroit on FM and KDKA-FM (The Fan) Pittsburgh. WNNX (99X) Atlantaand KITS (Live 105.3) San Franciscoare pre-PPM brands but were surprisingly successful recent relaunches. (In recent weeks, they?ve also prompted two new gold-based Alternative outlets in Canada that were not revived brands.) KDKB (Alt AZ 93) Phoenix has shown that not all new Alt brands need to be gold-driven. Eleven months ago, WMIA (Magic 93.9) Miami became one of the most recent success stories by combining a softer, gold-based AC with Spanish-language jocks. Last month, Magic posted its best numbers in 15 years. So far, the only surprise is that more imitators haven?t emerged, although some stations have already moved to block any such competitor. UPDATE: Mere hours after I wrote this, Cox made a similar move with WOEX (Hits 96.5) Orlando, Fla. You?re not seeing a lot of current-based music formats here. If anything, the second and third Top 40 stations in many markets that sprouted as a result of PPM and the format boom of the late ?00s/early ?10s probably exacerbated its demise by making CHR narrower and more extreme. KMVQ (99.7 Now) San Francisco, one of the few late ’00s CHR challengers to emerge as the market?s format leader, has been a favorite of this column for some decidedly retro touches ? manageable spotloads and music enterprise. There are stations featured in ?Intriguing? articles of years past that didn?t spur format trends. Some are highly rated (KTWV Los Angelesin its R&B Oldies era). Others have found a niche without them ? St. Louis-based Christian Rhythmic CHR network KXBS (Boost Radio);iHeart?s Black Information Network; KGAY Palm Springs;the Asian pop format on KUCD (Pop 99.1) Honolulu. A few were filling traditional format holes; e.g., Adult R&B WTBV (The Vibe) Tampa. The implication here is not, by the way, that PPM drove format innovation as much as that format innovation took place anyway. Some of the boldest moves of the last 15 years, particularly with spotload (Entercom/Audacy?s Two-Minute Promise) or sponsorships (KZPS Dallas),have faded. That said, many broadcasters are hopeful that upcoming Nielsen measurement changes will reopen those discussions. And iHeart?s BIN has found a place in part due to sponsorships and non-traditional revenue. Being able to successfully launch against the fragmentation and financial tumult of the last 15 years was a flex for broadcast radio. Besides, as I went back to those early ?Intriguing? articles, I found myself using the phrase ?despite radio?s current tumult? a lot and well before Pandora and PPM.* There are streams and stations that intrigue beyond the broadcast dial: SiriusXM?s TikTok Radio and Yacht Rock Radio, Spotify?s Today?s Top Hits, TuneIn?s the Big 615, Apple Music’s channels, the just-launched K-Love Pop, the more viable digital tiers in the UK and Australia. KRTY San Jose isn’t a new station, but the home it found as an online-only outfit was a surprise development of recent years. Overall, I?m surprised how many of my ?Intriguing? outlets of the last 15 years have been AM/FM radio in the U.S. and Canada. As is always the case here, sins of omission aren?t intentional. The examples given are intended to be directional, not definitive. The Facebook thread contains numerous others. But I?m gratified by what I?ve seen in my ?Intriguing? stories ? I remember them for the quirky-but-ultimately-not-viable stations or deeper oldies outlets. As we get ready for ?Intriguing Stations of 2024? in early January, it?s nice to see stations that are built to win as well.* more

From Radio Insight: Villecom’s Country “Mighty 93” 93.1 KSTV-FM Dublin/Stephenville TX is morning the loss of Program Director/afternoon host Trey Cordie after he was killed in an automobile accident over the weekend at the age of 26. Cordie joined KSTV-FM in October 2022 and also served as play-by-play voice for 6 man high school football on sister “94.3 The Ox” KYOX Comanche. He began his radio career in 2019 at LKCM Radio Group’s cluster of stations circling the Dallas/Fort Worth market under the tutelage of his mother Erin Wilde, who hosts middays at Country “92.1 Hank-FM” KTFW-FM Glen Rose TX and afternoons at Classic Hits “95.5 K-Hits” KTWF Wichita Falls, KOME-FM Tolar/Stephenville, and 106.5 KITT Meridian. KSTV-FM Owner/General Manager/morning host Boots Elliott told Beneath The Suface News, “It?s a horrible loss. Trey had been with us for just over two years and had really settled into his position. We had basically turned over the entire on-air operation to him as he had worked hard to prove himself as being knowledgeable and capable. This is a tough time for our radio station family.? more

From Radio Insight: In its Q3 2024 Earnings Report released today, TelevisaUnivision noted it had sold its tower portfolio. The sale was to SBA Communications and was completed in September. The deal included the the 1000 foot tower utilized by Univision’s Regional Mexican “Que Buena 102.9” KLTN Houston and Spanish CHR “Latino Mix 104.9” KAMA-FM Deer Park along with Pueblo de Galilea’s Black Talk 1230 KCOH Houston that was involved in the deadly helicopter crash in Houston on Sunday night. TelevisaUnivision did not release a sale price, but noted that the company used the net proceeds to pay down $150 million in debt. In a response to KHOU-TV in regards to the crash in Houston, SBA acknowledged it acquired the downed site along with others from the company. The full statement by SBA reads: Late in the evening on Sunday, October 20, 2024, we were made aware of a tragic incident that occurred at one of our newly acquired tower sites in the Houston area. Our understanding is that a guyed tower was struck by a private helicopter, resulting in the death of four individuals who were on-board. We are in the process of cooperating with authorities on a full investigation. This is a tragic incident, and we ask everyone to please keep the deceased and their families in their thoughts and prayers. While reviewing the coverage of the event, we have noticed that there has unfortunately been some incomplete and/or inaccurate information provided. We hope that what is provided below, which addresses a primary topic of discussion, will provide clarity and correction to some of these inaccuracies. Questions have been raised regarding the filing of a NOTAM for the cell tower in Houston. We would like to provide a clear perspective of what this entails. NOTAMs (Notice to Air Missions) with the FAA are to inform pilots of work notices, potential hazards, or changes that may impact their flight. These types of notifications are to provide pilots information and direction to be cautious of a specific location and may be filed for a variety of reasons. This specific site was recently acquired by SBA on September 6, 2024.
