From Radio Insight: Bill Adams has exited his dual role of morning host on Hubbard Radio Classic Hits “Sunny 107.9” WEAT and Conservative Talk 850 WFTL West Palm Beach FL. Adams and Jennifer Ross have been pulling double-duty in mornings on both stations since 2015. Adams previously spent eighteen years at Country 107.9 WIRK from 1995 until 2013 (following its 2012 move to 103.1) rising through roles including evening host, News Director, and morning host before moving to mornings on WEAT under many ownership groups In a video announcing his departure, Adams says he received a very generous severance package, but says he “is weirdly fine and never expected to be.” Jennifer Ross says the WFTL morning show will resume after a “vacation” on Tuesday, August 27 with the station now listing producer Stephen Deiner as co-host. A few other off-air staffers have also exited Hubbard West Palm Beach including many members of the cluster’s digital department and longtime Production Director Mick McCabe. https://x.com/wickedbilladams/status/1826687976224817235 more

From Radio Insight: Beasley Media Group Country 92.5 WXTU Philadelphia’s Andie Summers Show will be syndicated to Boston and Las Vegas starting on Monday, August 26. At “Country 102.5” WKLB-FM Waltham/Boston, the show will replace Ayla Brown and Jonathan Wier who have exited the station. “Coyote Country 107.9” KCYE Meadview AZ/Las Vegas PD/morning host Shawn Stevens moves to middays. The Andie Summers Show features Summers, who has been with WXTU since 1999, Jeff Kurkjian, Producer Donnie Black and Assistant Producer Shannon Boyle. Kurkjian previously spent four years in mornings at KCYE before moving to Philadelphia in 2022. Beasley Chief Content Officer Justin Chase said, ?Andie Summers has been beloved by loyal fans in Philly for decades and the show brand has only improved in recent years with the addition of Jeff Kurkjian, Donnie Black and Shannon Boyle. I have no doubt that Country radio listeners in Boston and Vegas will fall in love with this amazing cast.? Ayla Brown had been with WKLB since December 2018. A former American Idol contestant, Brown has released multiple Country albums and spent four years on the women?s basketball team at Boston College. Wier was on his second stint in mornings at WKLB returning last October after previously co-hosting with Brown from September 2019 until being laid off in October 2022. He previously spent his career mostly in Talk formats, spending seven years in late mornings and then evenings at KMBZ-FM Kansas City and at WSKY Gainesville FL. The move leaves no local full-time air talent at WKLB as midday host Carolyn Kruse will retire on Thursday, August 28 and afternoon host Jackson Blue was let go in the company’s May layoffs. more

From Radio Insight: In late July, I got an e-mail from Radioinsight ratings tracker Chris Huff after the UK?s RAJAR ratings were released: ?Capital up 3.4-4.2 (best share since Q2/2019) and BBC Radio 1up 3.5-4.0 (best since Q4/2021). CHR rebound? Taylor Swift kiss? Or both.? Last week, there was another e-mail from Huff, this one sharing the news from the UK?s RadioToday that Bauer?s national CHR network, Hits Radio, would be getting a London FM frequency, sending longtime rhythmic CHR Kiss to DAB.* Capital owner Global and Kiss owner Bauer have been using their stations to jostle each other for years. In the late ?90s, Global?s Hot AC Heart FM was heavily rhythmic, seemingly to protect Capital from Kiss. At that time, Bauer?s newly assembled national Hits network was contrarian for its throwback and pop components. That now places it squarely between Capital and a more pop-leaning Heart. In recent years, British CHR has sounded consistently better to me than its American counterpart, particularly because of its greater dance-music component and thus better energy level. Unlike in many U.S. markets, CHR did sound better than its numbers here. But London is still a heavily fragmented market, such that having the existing CHRs in the 4-share range is a rebound. I took a Fresh Listen to Capital and Greatest Hits. I listened to Radio 1, even though it also got a Fresh Listen (as part of an article on several BBC stations) in April. If the numbers here reflect the excitement over Swift being in the market this week, it?s worth noting that there?s a DAB side channel called ?Capital (Taylor?s Version).? I didn?t do a full listen to that one, but its last four played were ?Lavender Haze,? ?Enchanted,? ?Cruel Summer,? and ?The Lakes.? Here’s the main Capital London just before 4 p.m., August 7 with Will Manning: David Guetta, Becky Hill & Ella Henderson, ?Crazy What Love Can Do? Sabrina Carpenter, ?Espresso? Tom Grennan, ?Remind Me? Perrie, ?Forget About Us? Kid Laroi, ?Girls? Taylor Swift, ?Anti-Hero? Hailee Steinfeld, ?Starving? Rudimental, ?Bring Me Joy? Lady Gaga & Beyonc?, ?Telephone? Becky Hill, ?Outside of Love? Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello, ?Senorita? Post Malone & Morgan Wallen, ?I Had Some Help? Timbaland, ?The Way I Are? Teddy Swims, ?The Door? Calvin Harris x Rag ?n? Bone Man, ?Lovers in a Past Life? Rema & Selena Gomez, ?Calm Down? ? a rollover sweeper had three voices each instructing a speaker to ?play Capital,? timing out perfectly just before the intro?s declaration of ?another banger.? Hits Radio was promoting the opening of Borderlands with a contest variant on the backwards or sped-up mystery song: in this case, a distorted song described as the remix that would have been heard on the movie?s Planet Pandora. (The contestant easily guessed that it was Craig David?s ?Fill Me In.?) Here?s Hits, positioned as ?the biggest hits, the biggest throwbacks,? as heard on its London DAB feed with Tom Greer at 11 a.m., August 9: Noah Kahan, ?Stick Season? Mark Ronson f/Amy Winehouse, ?Valerie? Lost Frequencies f/Colum Scott, ?Where Are You Now? Rita Ora, ?Ask and You Shall Receive? ?N Sync, ?Bye Bye Bye? ? the throwback stager is based on UK hit ?Sing It Back? by Moloko Cian Ducrot, ?I?ll Be Waiting? Sabrina Carpenter, ?Espresso? Ed Sheeran, ?Shape of You? Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding, ?Free? Jay-Z f/Alicia Keys, ?Empire State of Mind? Shaboozey, ?A Bar Song (Tipsy)? Becky Hill & David Guetta, ?Remember? Perrie, ?Forget About Us? Radio 1?s Matt Edmonson was solo when heard here. Partner Mollie King had just announced her pregnancy ? after several months of swearing him to secrecy. I?ve come back to Radio 1 a few times in recent years both because of its new music and variety component (see Glass Animals to Drake to Clairo below). Here?s the station at 1 p.m., August 12: Coldplay, ?Feels Like I?m Falling in Love? Little Sims, ?Gorilla? METTE, ?Bet? Glass Animals, ?A Tear in Space (Airlock)? Drake f/Lil Durk, ?Laugh Now, Cry Later? Clairo, ?Sexy to Someone? Yungblud, ?Hope for the Underrated Youth? Rudimental & Karen Harding, ?Bring Me Joy? ? followed by a two-minute newscast; there had also been an Olympics vignette earlier that hour Jamie xx & Robyn, ?Life? Ice Spice & Central Cee, ?Did It First? Wolf Alice, ?Don?t Delete the Kisses? Jungle, ?Back on ?74? Mabel, ?Don?t Call Me Up? Gracie Abrams, ?Close to You? ?* a contestant for the ?Five to Two? contest (at 1:55 p.m.) successfully named five vegetables, four smelly things, three planets, two synonyms for dancing, and got to make one request. Joel Corry & Tom Grennan, ?Lionheart (Fearless)? Sabrina Carpenter, ?Please Please Please? Tyler the Creator f/Kali Uchis, ?See You Again? more

He most recently served as Creative Services Director for WVEE Atlanta and earlier in his career hosted nights at WBLS New York. KaShauna ?K Samone? From Radio Insight: It?s hard being an obit writer in radio these days. The impending loss of all-news WCBS-AM New York was announced while I was still figuring out what to write about Kiss 100 London. That station helped make R&B and dance core sounds in UK and European radio over the course of the ?90s; now it?s moving from FM to DAB-only (not quite the end of viability in the UK as it would be here, but still significant). Before I could write that story, the CBS-AM news shook the industry. As I wrote this column, another heritage AM, CHML Hamilton, Ontario, was shut off outright. Like songs, I have place memories of radio stations. WCBS is the station of late-night driving with my dad on the New Jersey Turnpike, but, really, anywhere in the Northeast. I had already discovered the CBS Morning News, and WCBS had a lot of the same network reporters and commentators. My father rarely listened to Top 40 just to keep up with his kids; it was WCBS that gave us something to talk about. The loss of heritage radio stations has seemed like a barrage in recent years. With the changes at Kiss and WCBS came the realization that I?ve been losing heritage stations for almost as long as I?ve been listening to radio.* My college years coincided with the effective demise of almost every AM Top 40 station I had ever listened to. Some went Country. Some evolved to AC, something which almost never worked. Some, such as WLS Chicago or KFRC San Francisco, took a few years longer than others. Ironically, WCBS-AM was probably my most enduring station of childhood because it wasn?t a music station. Occasionally, as with WLS, those heritage brands transitioned to FM, although since AM Top 40’s travails coincided with a format downturn, surprisingly few did so at the time. The rise of Oldies brought some of those brands back. My most-influential Top 40, Detroit/Windsor?s CKLW, was revived twice with FM oldies; now, it?s the inspiration for CKWW-AM?s Oldies format. At this writing, I’m now waiting to see what new owners do with that station. (CK is also the inspiration for former PD Charlie O?Brien?s Big8Radio.com.)* To cover the radio industry as a reporter has been to experience radio stations as ephemeral and even the enduring ones as ever-changing. Even stations we now think of as ?CHR for 40 years,? such as WHTZ (Z100) New York, were rarely exactly that. Z100?s brand remained the same, but barely camouflaged a change to Alternative, then, briefly, Rock AC in the ?90s.* When WPLJ New York became a K-Love affiliate in 2019, it left three legacies to celebrate; some of the same listeners had likely followed WPLJ from AOR to CHR to Hot AC. Covering format changes was more fun and rarely devastating when radio was healthier ? each format change was a beginning, not just an ending. Like the songs themselves that radio played, each was a potential hit, or maybe even something for next year?s Intriguing Stations column. And the stations I was sorriest to lose weren?t always heritage stations; often, they were the quirky offerings I liked that had never caught on. The most discouraging changes were the sales that claimed still-competitive radio stations. In 2009, the then-WAMO Pittsburgh?s sale to Catholic broadcasters who took it out of the format mainstream was still an anomaly. By 2022, market-leading Country KRTY San Jose?s sale to K-Love and move to online-only was not. So were music stations moved aside so News/Talk outlets could move to FM, or heritage AMs perfunctorily shut down. The loss of heritage stations is dispiriting ? another instance where radio still being bigger than its competitors hardly seems to matter. There is broader damage from the decreasing number of all AM/FM choices. Also from the increasing number of stations switched to formats, such as sports betting, that aren?t meant to compete for ratings. Each scenario could lead to decreased listening levels overall. Few endings are a new beginning now. There are plenty of heritage radio stations that haven?t gone anywhere. A few years ago, looking at radio ratings from 1984 led to a column on how many brands were still on the radio with a similar format nearly 40 years later. In Washington, D.C., that was nearly half of the radio stations that were above a 1 share at the time. In New York, it was about 45%. (Boston, at 30%, was one of the lowest, and that was before the sale to K-Love of WAAF.) Some heritage brands, particularly those that have gone from Top 40 to Classic Hits or AOR to Classic Rock, have format continuity of a sort, but don?t occupy the same place in the cultural discussion. I was always happy to have an Oldies station drawing on CKLW?s heritage, but what I really missed about the station as Top 40 was seeing what R&B hits it would propel into the mainstream. The Detroit station that most does that now, WKQI (Channel 95-5), is related to CKLW in spirit only. It?s great, though, when WMMR Philadelphia or a relaunched KITS (Live 105) San Francisco are still part of the new music dialogue. Some enduring radio brands also become reminders of radio?s diminishment. What good are heritage call letters if the voice-tracker can?t even be bothered to work them into a break? Being so local and so dependent on living in real time kept WCBS-AM sounding vital, but also made it more vulnerable to radio?s current realities. When new lessee Good Karma moves its New York outlet for ESPN to WCBS-AM?s frequency, it will leave an opening at 98.7 FM that ROR readers have been speculating on for a year. It?s a lot to hope for a new mainstream or market-galvanizing launch now. In the best scenario, that new station cannot be ?Newsradio 880.? But it could be a station that means something to New Yorkers. Or gives radio a renewed sense of sign-ons, not just sign-offs. more

From Radio Insight: The one time king of Cincinnati radio is making a move back in town. Randy Michaels’ Radioactive LLC is purchasing Spanish CHR “Mega 97.7” WOXY Mason from Lazo Media for $1.8 million. The Class A signal covers the suburban areas between Cincinnati and Dayton. The signal is best known from its 1983-2005 run as Alternative ?97X?, which was famously depicted in the movie “Rain Man“. Michaels run in Cincinnati began programming CHR “Q102” WKRQ in 1975 before moving to the same role at 700 WLW, where he also worked on-air. He was then part of the ownership group that would acquire WLW from Taft Broadcasting in 1983. That group would be folded into Jacor in 1986 with Michaels as VP/Programming until rising to CEO in 1993. Following Jacor’s 1999 acquisition by Clear Channel, Michaels would become Chairman/CEO until his 2002 exit operating both from his office in Covington KY right across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. Michaels would later serve as CEO of LocalTV LLC, Tribune Broadcasting and Merlin Media. Radioactive LLC also owns 92.5 WBLH Black River NY, 101.9 WKFC North Corbin KY, and 102.9 WPBK Crab Orchard KY. Those stations are all leased to third parties to operate. more
