From Radio Insight: University of North Carolina Public News/Talk 91.5 WUNC-FM Chapel Hill/Raleigh NC will shut down its AAA “WUNC Music” streaming and HD2 brand at the end of the month. WUNC launched the service in August 2016. WUNC President/General Manager Paul Hunton stated that the original plan for WUNC Music was to secure a terrestrial signal but “the shifting economic and listening dynamics of broadcast radio have made that challenging”. At the time it was the only AAA in the market, but would be joined by Capitol Broadcasting’s “That Station” 1550 WCLY/95.7 W239CK Raleigh in May 2018. WUNC Music Director Brian Burns will move to WUNC’s digital news team. Burns also hosted “Future Shock” for the station. Hunton added, “Our commitment to music culture remains strong as we pivot to engage audiences in new and innovative ways. By realigning our resources, we aim to bring more music coverage to our original programs, website, and social media channels. Our goal is to solidify WUNC’s position as an important source of information for the music scene in the Triangle and beyond. This strategic shift will allow us to better serve our community by providing richer, more diverse content that highlights the dynamic music culture of North Carolina.” We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Brian for his outstanding work and unwavering commitment. His contributions have truly made a difference, and we look forward to his continued impact on all of our content initiatives. WUNC remains dedicated to serving our listeners with the highest quality content and are excited about the opportunities ahead. more

From Radio Insight: FCC ActionsFollowing a proposal submitted last week from Commander Communications Corporation on behalf of its “Smooth Soul 100.5” WRTM-FM Sharon MS, the FCC is seeking comments in regards to creating a new station class “A10” with a maximum of 10,000 watts effective radiated power (ERP) and 100 meters height above average terrain (HAAT). The proposal also seeks to amend existing facility requirements and minimum distance separation requirements to accommodate the new FM station class. The Class A10 stations would be required to operate with between 6kW and 10kW ERP at the equivalent of 100 meters HAAT. The proposal is another attempt to create a station class between a Class A and C3 following the rejected Class C4 proposal that would’ve created a class of stations operating at 12kW from a reference antenna height of 100 meters above average terrain in Zone II. Unlike that proposal, the A10 class is meant to be utilized across all zones. The proposal with the proposed spacing requirements can be read here.
