From Radio Insight: Longtime 105.7 WAPL Appleton/Green Bay WI co-host Rick McNeal is stepping down from the morning show at the Woodward Communications Classic Rocker after being off-the-air with health issues for the past few months. McNeal has been with WAPL since 1985, mostly partnered with Len Nelson from 1985 until 1999 and 2003 until Nelson’s firing in March 2021. He has been with Andrew ?Cutter? Puyleart since April 2021. McNeal had been off the air since March when a fall led to a hospitalization and developing a bacterial infection. He called into the morning show this morning to announce his departure, although if heath allows he will make guest appearances. WAPL had already begun the search for Cutter’s new co-host. McNeal and the station shared the following message: Hey folks, it?s with heavy hearts that we announce some tough news. We had exciting plans to celebrate Rick?s retirement and honor his remarkable 39-year career of entertaining Northeast Wisconsin at WAPL. Unfortunately, due to his ongoing health issues following the WAPL International Incident in early March, Rick is now stepping away. As a result, we?re now faced with moving forward without him as we start the search for a new co-host to join Cutter in the morning. It?s a tough spot all around, no doubt about it. Sucks for him, sucks for you, sucks for us. If Rick is feeling up to it, he may return as a guest in the future. Let?s come together to send Rick our best wishes and gear up to welcome a new voice to the team. Stay tuned for updates on his upcoming benefit event. ? From Radio Insight: ENCO Systems, Inc.,*Benztown, and Compass Media Networks*introduce a new voice cloning feature for their award-winning SPECai spec spot creation product for radio. The first-of-its-kind feature gives SPECai users even more customization, diversity, and choice in creating high quality, high impact spec spots for clients. SPECai uses advanced AI technology to generate fully produced spec spots in English and Spanish, including regional accents. SPECai?s innovative new voice cloning feature allows users to easily clone voices they have the authorization to use in creating a spec spot. SPECai replicates the authorized voice, analyzing a user-uploaded audio sample, which users can then customize to suit the intended tone or emotion. SPECai?s immediate turnaround dramatically reduces the costs and labor associated with manual voice cloning processes, with production times reduced from hours to seconds. Ken Frommert, President, ENCO Systems, Inc., said: ?The voice of the business or radio station now has a powerful tool to lend more credibility to their AI spec spots. SPECai has already changed the game for radio broadcasters and advertisers seeking to streamline and reduce the costs of ad production. Our instant voice cloning feature amplifies SPECai?s value proposition by providing users with a simple and straightforward workflow to upload their own samples of voices they are authorized to use, and create compelling ads that more effectively connect audiences and sponsors.? The voice cloning feature is a premium add-on feature available in the SPECai user interface. From Radio Insight: Tom Oakes has announced he will retire from his role as Operations Manager for SummitMedia Springfield MO at the end of the year. Oakes, who also serves as Program Director and afternoon host for Country 94.7 KTTS, originally joined the cluster under Scripps ownership in 2018 for what was supposed to be an interim role. He would follow that with interim duties as Program Director of WCYQ Knoxville TN and Operations Manager in Omaha before returning to Springfield in July 2019 and taking the role permanently in September 2020. Prior to those roles, Oakes was at Ohana Media Group in Anchorage AK from 2011-2018 where he was the company’s VP/Programming and local Operations Manager before rising to cluster General Manager preceded as VP/Programming for New Northwest Broadcasters and Operations Manager for their Billings MT and Anchorage properties. He also has been OM for Federated Media South Bend IN, programmed WBYT South Bend, WOW/WOW-FM Omaha, and WHIT/WWQM Madison WI. Oakes shared: This is a bit long (I’ve never been one to be brief in comments LOL)* Back in June of 2018 after 13 years I left Alaska to return to Minnesota to be closer to my family. After fighting cancer, those 2500 miles between Anchorage and Minneapolis seem a bit too far. My goal was to settle down in Minnesota or Wisconsin, find a job and enjoy more time with the family. Then Beverlee Brannigan (at the then-Scripps Media) called with an unique opportunity that was similar to “rent a cop” or in this case “rent an OM-PD.” Off to Missouri I went, SummitMedia purchased the stations and I continued my travels on their behalf to Knoxville and Omaha and eventually back to Springfield. Now, nearly six years later after starting this part of my career, the time has come to depart Springfield and return to the great north and live life near my brother Steve, sister-in-law Diane, my nieces Jen, Katie, Hannah and their families and my cousins and friends across the upper-Midwest. So on December 31, I will be retiring after more than 49 years of a fantastic career in an incredible industry. Much has changed since I started in the 70’s from playing music off of 45’s and albums and commercials on carts and live radio around the clock to everything on computer, systems that work hand-in-hand, groups of stations that use to be competitors and an industry that went wall street. But it’s still a people person (though sadly fewer these days). My thanks to our incredible leader, Springfield President-Market Manager Janelle C Grove Moffett, the great staff of SummitMedia-Springfield, and to Randy Chase, John Olsen, the late Bill Tanner and everyone at SummitMedia for allowing me to be part of this journey. And to those individuals who mentored, help, suffered and put up with me over all these years. Thank you to my family and friends for everything. And on December 31st it’s on to the next stage of life. more

From Radio Insight: Sun Broadcasting quietly eliminated its “Hell Yeah” Country brand in Fort Myers on July 1. What originally launched in September 2020 as “Trump Country 93.7” WXNX Sanibel, the station would become “Hell Yeah 93.7” WHEL in December of that year following the last election. The brand would get demoted to translator 94.1 W231DC Fort Myers and WHEL-HD3 in January to make way for the launch of “Hot 93.7“. In its final ratings survey on 93.7 in December 2023, WHEL was the third-ranked Country station and sixteenth overall in the market with a 1.7 share. It would drop to a 0.1 share in the May 2024 ratings on 94.1. The 94.1 translator has joined Sun’s “Fox Sports” network of translators along with 103.3 W277AP Bayshore and 105.9 W290DB Naples. W277AP had dropped its “Rock 103.3” identity in May to rejoin the Sports brand. The loss of “Hell Yeah 94.1” leaves the Fort Myers market with its two preceding Country brands: Renda’s “Gator Country 101.9” WWGR and iHeartMedia’s “Cat Country 107.1” WCKT. more

From Radio Insight: FCC ActionsThe FCC has implemented new tools to determine the permissible pre-sunrise and post-sunset operating parameters for eligible AM stations. The commission had withdrawn all pre-sunrise and post-sunset authorizations in 2007 following enactment of the US Energy Policy Act of 2005, which lengthened the duration of Daylight Savings Time and changed the local sunrise and sunset times for most of the country. Due to unanticipated computer problems that produced erroneous power levels on certain recalculated authorizations, the use was suspended until correct power levels could be computed. Stations that wish to operate with increased power at pre-sunrise or post-sunset are told to submit a letter request to Joseph Szczesny or Jerome Manarchuck of the Audio Division AM engineering staff, at PSRPSS@fcc.gov. The request must include (1) the licensee name, station callsign, facility ID, frequency, location, and the file number of the licensed daytime facility; (2) an indication as to whether the licensee intends PSRA operation, PSSA operation, or both; and (3) a description of the method whereby any necessary power reduction will be achieved. The Audio Division will then calculate authorized power from their daytime or critical hours antenna system. Pirate ActionsThe FCC has issued thirteen warnings to property owners in the New York metropolitan area over pirate stations operating out of their properties. The warnings were issued to: Gais Jeune and Isabel Moriceau for 91.7 Irvington NJ Saint Hubert and Rosemise Exantus for 87.9 Newark NJ 803 Sanford LLC for 90.9 Newark NJ Roy, Annette, and Gladys McClaire for 102.5 Newark NJ Parkash 2691 LLC for 88.9 Bronx NY 2522 Realty LLC for 94.9 Bronx NY W 2030 LLC for 90.5 Brooklyn NY 80 Lenox LLC for for 90.9 Brooklyn NY Royen A. WIRB filed a Silent STA application in January, however two people commented to the commission that the station has been silent for several years and that its facilities were dismantled over a year ago. The FCC sent a letter of inquiry in June, which was followed by the licensee surrendering the license. UM Enterprise LLC’s 1360 WMOB Mobile AL has been cancelled after being off the air since August 2022. The licensee admitted to an FCC inquiry that it has failed to operate in over twelve months making its license expired. Dave Minard’s UM Enterprise had acquired WMOB and 1110 WTOF Bay Minette in April 2022 for $100 following former owner Buddy Tucker Association’s Lavaughn Tucker’s age and being unable to keep up with the expense of operating the stations leading them to ceasing operation in November 2020. Community Public Radio has turned in its Construction Permit for 90.5 KRAM Borrego Springs CA after learning it will require a $100,000 major building permit from San Diego County. Wendolynn Tellez has turned in the license for 103.3 KSAG Pearsall TX. KSAG has had multiple CP’s to relocate to 93.3 in order to allow Alpha Media to sign-on its CP for 103.3 KJAK Pearsall that has been tolled since 2016. From Radio Insight: Throughout the ?Streaming Country? era, the challenge has been for stations to decide just how much to lean into newer music and artists. Stations were coming off a period where pummeling each other for the ?New Country? franchise seemed to be punishing only the listeners. It was only 15 months ago that Country Radio Seminar attendees saw results of a national music test that was as kind to John Michael Montgomery as Morgan Wallen.* Sometimes, the hits from streaming, whether Zach Bryan or Beyonce, Dasha, and Shaboozey ? test the format boundaries as well. Stations like KYGO Denver, KKBQ (93Q Country) Houston, and KBAY San Jose, Calif., have been quickest on Country?s streaming-driven reaction records, but those songs have been part of a broad mix, particularly on 93Q and KBAY, which go back to the ?90s as well. Alpha’s KBAY has some of the most interesting weekly adds in the format, but it’s also trying to repatriate listeners of the former KRTY,*which still exists online. It’s cheating a little to compare Australia?s Nova Fresh Country, which launched last month, to any of its U.S. mainstream counterparts. It?s a streaming side channel of Australia?s CHR Nova network; (its rivals, ARN/iHeart and SCA?s Triple-M, already have digital Country side channels). It is produced, but not hosted. U.S. broadcasters already believe SiriusXM?s the Highway has freedoms that their ratings-driven stations don?t. They?ll probably find it curious at best. But Nova Fresh Country has definitely piqued my curiosity as well, just by its sheer volume of new titles, streaming-driven success stories, and songs that poke the parameters of the format. (UK Country often does the latter too. It wasn’t surprising that ?Texas Hold ?Em? became a hit, since the UK had played ?Old Town Road? as well.) But if you’re interested in hearing what a more aggressive version of streaming-driven Country would sound like, it’s a good place to hear those songs in a radio context (as opposed to just a playlist). I took a First Listen, as well as a Fresh Listen to KBAY. Here?s Nova Country just before 10 a.m. on July 10: Nate Smith, ?World on Fire? Shaboozey, ?A Bar Song (Tipsy)? Chris Stapleton, ?Tennessee Whiskey? Jelly Roll, ?Need a Favor? ? yes, spelled ?favour? on the website Riley Green, ?Worst Way? Luke Combs, ?Ain?t No Love in Oklahoma? Josh Ross, ?Trouble? Post Malone & Blake Shelton, ?Pour Me a Drink? Michael Marcagi, ?Scared to Start? Chayce Beckham, ?23? Here?s Nova around 10:15 a.m. on July 11: Koe Wetzel & Jesse Murph, ?High Road? Beyonc?, ?Jolene? Bailey Zimmerman, ?Holy Smokes: Warren Zeiders, ?Pretty Little Poison? Post Malone & Morgan Wallen, ?I Had Some Help? Taylor Moss, ?Dream Baby? ? uptempo/poppy number from an Australian female act; hook is ?we ain?t a dream, baby? Tucker Wetmore, ?Wine Into Whiskey? Lainey Wilson, ?Watermelon Moonshine?* Alana Springsteen & Chris Stapleton, ?Ghost in My Guitar? Hardy, ?Truck Bed? Tyler Braden, ?Devil You Know? Jelly Roll, ?Need a Favor? Ashley Cooke, ?Your Place? Tori Forsyth, ?All We Are? ? Uptempo with Mumfordish (or Noah Kahan-ish) folk feel Old Dominion, ?Memory Lane? Luke Combs, ?Ain?t No Love in Oklahoma? Zach Bryan, ?Pink Skies? I also took a recent Fresh Listen to San Jose?s KBAY. That station has taken a more aggressive tack than KRTY, the market?s previous Country station, which went streaming-only two years ago. KRTY played plenty of new music as well but leaned more traditional. KRTY demonstrably took several of its shares online, at least at the outset; so KBAY?s music now scans ?90s to today in an effort to cover all the market bases.* (With Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” moving 8-4 on the Country chart and 3-1 on the Billboard Hot 100, it’s worth noting that it played first in Country on consecutive days in late April at*KSOP (Z104) Salt Lake City,*93Q, and KBAY. Z104 backed off the song and is only moving it back up in rotation now, making 93Q and KBAY the most sustained supporters. Here’s KBAY just before 11 a.m., June 24: Chris Stapleton, ?White Horse? Brooks & Dunn, ?Brand New Man? Dierks Bentley, ?Somewhere on a Beach? Luke Combs, ?Fast Car? Zach Bryan, ?Pink Skies? Post Malone & Morgan Wallen, ?I Had Some Help? Alan Jackson, ?Don?t Rock the Jukebox? Bailey Zimmerman, ?Religiously? Ashley Cooke, ?Your Place? Tyler Hubbard, ?Dancing in the Country? Jelly Roll, ?Halfway to Hell? Thomas Rhett, ?Beer Can?t Fix? Carrie Underwood, ?Undo It? Jordan Davis, ?Tucson Too Late? Chris Lane, ?I Don?t Know About You? Jason Aldean, ?Burning It Down? Ashley McBryde, ?The Devil I Know? more
